Because of the hot, dry conditions, flames are on the verge of reaching Mount Wilson, where 22 television stations and many radio stations have their transmitters. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger urged those in the fire’s path to listen to authorities and get out. Yet many residents refuse to leave, causing 3 persons to suffer serious burns. Two firefighters have also been killed when their vehicle rolled off a mountainside as they battled an intense fire near Mt. Gleason in northern Los Angeles County. The communities most affected by the Southern California Wildfires are: Auburn, Oak Glen-Yucaipa, Acton, Mt. Wilson, and La Canada Flintridge which is also known as the Station Fire with over 42,000 acres burned.

While thousands have fled their homes in the communities of Auburn, Oak Glen, Yucaipa, Acton, and La Canada Flintridge, two really non-thinking people who tried to ride out the firestorm in a backyard hot tub were burned. The pair in Big Tujunga Canyon, on the southwestern edge of the fire, completely underestimated the fire and the hot tub provided no protection for them. The couple made their way to firefighters and were airlifted out by a sheriff’s rescue helicopter. They had received notification to evacuate from deputies but decided to stay anyway. There injuries were serious with one being treated and released and the other in the hospital in stable condition.

Firefighters are currently working where flames are lapping at the foot of the vital communications and astronomy center of historic Mount Wilson – a place I went to often as a child. You can watch the Mt. Wilson cam here.

For the third straight day, humidity was very low and temperatures were in the high 90’s. Some 2,000 firefighters are battling the blazes with firefighters from other areas coming in to help. There are currently mandatory evacuations win effect for neighborhoods in Altadena and for the communities of Acton, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Big Tujunga Canyon.

At this writing, the wildfires in the Oak Glen Yucaipa areas of the San Bernardino National Forest, are growing having scorced about 350+ acres. The flames reported are threatening an unknown number of homes and Oak Glen has been evacuated. An Evacuation Center has been set up at Yucaipa Community Center at Yucaipa Regional Park.

The Auburn fire is in Northern California and at this writing is 50% contained however 275 acres and 60 buildings were burned. Wind gusts from 20 to 25 miles per hour kept smoke and embers low to the ground, spreading the flames ahead of the main body of the fire and keeping fire crews off guard as they tried to save homes in the area.

The California wildfires in Auburn, Oak Glen-Yucaipa, Acton, La Canada Flintridge-Station Fires will most certainly spread to other areas. We will try to update this post and hope and pray for safety of the brave firefighters on the front lines across the state.

Updated California wildfires information: The fire, scorching through the San Gabriel Mountains about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, slowed its pace overnight, growing by about one-fifth instead of doubling in size as it has on previous nights. But the Forest Service warned that higher winds expected later in the day on Tuesday could again increase fire activity. The air is noticeably more humid, and temperatures expected to be slightly cooler, which is giving firefighters guarded optimism. To date, approximately 200 square miles of rugged terrain has burned, 133,000 acres statewide with about 80 structures burned. The fire is still only 5% contained.
