Man, you gotta love Google Maps, they track everything, even the worst global warming offenders. They have a new feature (in conjunction with the UN) that allows you to pull up various maps and color code them by who has the most green house gas emissions since 1990. In this case, green is good and purple is bad. You can play with it by clicking here.
So, who are the worst offenders? China? India? The U.S.? Nope, if you guessed any of these you’d be wrong. Actually, the worst offender is Sweden (110% increase), Turkey (103% increase) and Canada (55% increase). Ouch. Where does the U.S. fall on this list you ask? Actually, we’re only the tenth worst with a 14% increase. Not bad actually. Take that Liechtenstein. I would have never guessed Sweden or Canada. How do they have so much global warming, there’s only a population of like 100 people between the countries.
Of course Google Maps can’t even give me accurate directions to my house, so take this all with a grain of salt. I also find it funny that for all of Africa, Asia and South America there is no data available. I’m guessing if you plug in data from those countries (why is there no data available, that is BS) then China and India would suddenly lurch to to the top.

Oh come on are you guys stupid?!? This article is misleading. The countries mentioned (sweden, canada…) maybe increased their emissions over 18 years, but they are not the worst emitters of CO2, the USA is the worst on a CO2/capita and China barely beats America on a “total emissions” scale… Sorry, but the USA are still the biggest polluters!

As it happens, business brings me to Canada all the time. Let me relay a conversation I had with a guy over a few drinks at a conference:
Canada guy: I am going to let you in on a secret.
Me: Really? Cool
Canada guy: You ever hear of Kyoto
Me: Sure
Canada guy: You know that we signed it and you didn’t? That makes us very concerned about the environment.
Me: right
Canada guy: Wrong. We signed it because we knew you would not. God forbid you guys should ever sign it. Then we lose our cover. 70% of our entire industry creates a ton of pollution. If we ever had to live by those standards, we would be in deep crap(edit).
Me: Why did you sing it?
Canada Guy: Because we want the rest of the world to love us, except for you (U.S.) guys. We just want you to think that we are relevant and that we matter. We KNOW you don’t think about us. We consider signing Kyoto an opportunity to do have the world love us and for the US to think we matter at the same time.
Me: So you don’t want us to sign it?
Canada guy: Good God, no! Have you been listening to me at all?
That was a real conversation.

Rob,
It is sad that you hate your country so much. I am sure that Cuba would love to take you.

BTW - Cuba has announced that it can no longer afford to run a state sponsored health care syatem.

This article is grossly misleading! It indicates the % change in production of emissions from 1990-2006 (taking 2006 as baseline). When you compare production (not % change) the results are quite different.
The largest producers of emissions are:
- USA : 6,170,520
- EU: 4,633,726
- Russia: 2,478,027
Run the numbers for yourself on the source site from the UN & select 2006 from the 3rd drop down menu: http://maps.unfccc.int/di/map/

Lies, damn lies and statistics. You can make numbers say whatever you want them to say. Doesn’t mean that my article is wrong.
August 2nd, 2009 at 12:24 pm
It is a proper moral outcome that the most efficient producers should be the ones with the greatest carbon footprint. It’s a good outcome for our world’s environment that the USA produces more emissions.

Bryan: Yes, it does mean that your article is wrong. You wrote:
“[...] color code them by who has the most green house gas emissions since 1990. [...] So, who are the worst offenders? China? India? The U.S.? Nope, if you guessed any of these you’d be wrong. Actually, the worst offender is Sweden (110% increase) [...]”
Now, you are talking about different views on the map. When color coded with the most green house gas emissions, US actually tops the chart, no matter what year you pick. If you pick the 1990-2006 growth in %, then Sweden will top it. That does NOT mean that they are the worst offenders, quite opposit they are actually #32 for 2006 with value 27,742. US is by far the “worst offender for most green house gas emissions” since 1990, with a value of 6,170,528 for 2006. That’s a whopping 22,242% increase over Sweden (!).
As a comparisation, would you say that your five-year old son is the worlds fastest man, since he has increased his running speed several times more than say Usain Bolt over the last five years?
