Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s “defense umbrella” statement seems to have come at an inopportune time; now Israel is wondering if Clinton was just musing about the possibility of a nuclear Iran or if the Obama Administration has resigned itself to that reality.

Clinton Defense Umbrella Doctrine

Hillary Clinton Asia Trip Slip Up

While in Asia, Hillary Clinton held a televised town hall and this is what she said:

The U.S. is “working to upgrade the defense of our partners in the region,” Clinton said during a televised town hall forum in Bangkok. “If the U.S. extends a defense umbrella over the region, if we do even more to support the military capacity of those in the Gulf, it’s unlikely that Iran will be any stronger or safer.”

Not long after the comments Secretary Clinton was having to explain her comments to our allies and others on her Asia trip. She says that our policy in the Middle East has not changed. The Clinton “defense umbrella” doctrine is not new.

Hillary Clinton used this approach interestingly enough against Barack Obama in the primaries. In a debate that took place in April of 2008, Clinton’s “defense umbrella” doctrine came to light:

“We should be looking to create an umbrella of deterrence that goes much further than just Israel,”

“Of course, I would make it clear to the Iranians that an attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation from the United States. But I would do the same with other countries in the region.”

I don’t know how long Obama thought he was going to be able to keep Hillary from being Hillary. She has a serious “my way is better” complex. Hillary insists that her statements were just a slip of the tongue; I think it was just the Clinton “defense umbrella” doctrine coming out before it was supposed to come out.

Let’s face it, the Obama Administration is getting nowhere by “talking” to Iran; he will eventually give in to the Clinton “defense umbrella” doctrine because he probably won’t have a choice. But don’t worry, by that time Israel will have taken appropriate steps.
