It’s being reported that Nancy Pelosi has asked the Bush administration for routine access to military aircraft for domestic flights, such as trips back to her San Francisco district. Multiple anonymous sources, both in Congress and within the administration have told the Washington Times that Pelosi has put in a request for regular military flights for herself, her staff, her relatives, and for colleagues in the California delegation. One of the Times’ sources described the request “carte blanche for an aircraft any time.”

Apparently this business of flying the Speaker of the House started shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks. Dennis Hastert, who was speaker at the time, started using Air Force planes for domestic travel due to security concerns. The Times did talk to a former Hastert aide that said the congressman did not use military planes for political trips or regularly transport his family. So although Pelosi’s request is nothing new, she seems to be trying to take advantage of the taxpayer’s generosity.

Since the run-up to the mid-tern elections of ’06, the Democrats have talked until they were blue in the face about government waste, and now their boss is trying to pull a stunt like this. Sure, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and I’m willing to play that game. Let Pelosi hop a flight back to San Francisco when she needs to, but if she wants to travel around the country with a posse, or take the grandkids to Disneyland for the weekend let her do it on her dime, not mine.
