Chrysler cash for junk or just junk?

Chrysler offers cash for clunkers, what a deal! Starting today through August 31st, you can trade in your old piece of junk and get a new Chrysler. Basically Chrysler is going to match the federal government’s own cash for clunker deal, offering consumers up to double the rebate or up to $9,000 in cash towards the purchase of a new Chrysler. You can get more information about Cash for Clunkers here. According to reports:

Chrysler said in a statement that buyers are eligible for the new incentive even if they are not trading in a vehicle under the government’s “cash for clunkers” legislation.

That program’s final rules will be announced Friday. It offers vouchers to car shoppers who trade in their old, fuel-inefficient vehicles for a cleaner new vehicle.

Not all vehicles qualify under the legislation, however. Car shoppers get a voucher worth $3,500 if they trade in a vehicle getting 18 mpg or less for one getting at least 22 mpg. The voucher grows to $4,500 if the new car’s mileage is 10 mpg higher than the old vehicle.

Personally I wouldn’t buy a Chrysler if my life depended on it. They are dead to me. Despite the fact that Chrysler is nearly giving their cars away there are good reasons to walk on by this particular deal. First there is the fact that Chrysler cars plain old suck. Even Consumer Reports say this deal isn’t worth it because Chrysler produces such junky cars. Second there are political considerations here. I refuse to support any company that is essentially being held hostage by the United Auto Workers. The UAW forced the big 3 into untenable situations and then, instead of dealing with the consequences of their actions, get bailed out by the US government and Fiat. No thanks, I’d rather by any Japanese car, at least I know they make good products and aren’t the stooges of the auto workers.
