Chinese Worker iphone suicide

1st 3 Generations of iPhones

Apple released a statement today insisting that all employees be treated with respect and dignity; this was prompted by allegations that security workers had roughed up the 25 year old Danyong. He worked for Foxconn Technology Group, a key supplier for Apple inc.

Apple and Foxconn both acknowledged that the Chinese worker committed suicide but details were not released concerning the connection between the suicide and the missing prototype investigation. A Chinese newspaper has this account of what happened:

The paper’s account, which hasn’t been disputed by the companies, said: Sun reported on July 13 that he was missing one of the 16 fourth-generation iPhones in his possession. Foxconn security guards searched his apartment, detained him and beat him. In the early morning of July 16, a distraught Sun jumped from the 12th floor of his apartment building.

A spokeswoman for Apple in China read this statement:

“We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death,” Tan said. “We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect.”

Hard to imagine why a 25 year old Chinese worker would commit suicide simply because he was missing a prototype of an iPhone. There seems to be much more to this story. Sun Danyong had a pretty good job being in charge of iPhone prototypes, Apple is a pretty secretive company when it comes to their new technology. Sun was obviously someone who was well trusted.
