In a sign that Sonia Sotomayor will sail through the confirmation process, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina (who is a conservative Republican), pretty much signaled in the hearings today that Republicans would not oppose her.

Lindsey Graham said during the confirmation hearing to Sotomayor, “Unless you have a complete meltdown, you are going to be confirmed.”

Given that the Senate now has 60 Democrats, he’s right.

Needless to say, so far Sonia Sotomayor has not had a complete meltdown, and probably will not do so in the coming days.

Graham criticized Sotomayor for her “wise Latina” quote, which we reported here, but did not believe the comment would affect her confirmation.

However, Graham said that, “If I ever said something remotely like that, my career would have been over.”

Lindsey Graham was a prominent Senator during the confirmation hearings of Samuel Alito. At one point, the Democrats accused Graham of coaching Samuel Alito on how to answer questions. Graham also expressed his support of Alito during questioning regarding the Concerned Alumni of Princeton organization that Alito was once a member of. Many accused the organization of being bigoted against minorities, but Graham came to Alito’s defense, stating that numerous African American judges had nothing but praise for Alito.

Graham became Senator of South Carolina in 2002, after Strom Thurmond’s retirement.
