It’s billed as the largest fireworks display in the Midwest; but organizers of Red White and Boom in Columbus Ohio say this year is going to be even bigger. The huge fireworks display is set to music ranging from Lee Greenwood all the way to AC/DC and the Jonas Brothers. Go figure.
Program director for WNCI in Columbus, Michael McCoy began working on the list of music way back in January. The selections change each year to provide variety, but old favorites like Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” is back on the list after not making the cut last year. From the Columbus Dispatch:
“That was not a good move on our part,” McCoy acknowledged. “We’re never going to make everybody totally happy. . . . We try to put something together that most anybody, regardless of age, can relate to.”
Maybe they figure the way things are going with Obama, “God Bless the USA” may become illegal in the near future. If you live in the area, it might be worth checking out. I’d also love to hear from any of you who have seen the show before.
The Red White and Boom Fireworks show is produced by Pyrotecnico of New Castle, Pa; they received the playlist in April and began using a computer program to choreograph the fireworks show along with the music.
Pyrotecnico produces about 600 fireworks shows on July 4th and choreographs about 90 of the 600. With all that goes into choreographing the fireworks show, they stay pretty busy. Red White and Boom for example, takes about 30 hours to choreograph, not to mention about a week to pack the fireworks.
This year the show will take place on Friday night and will be launched from the North side of Veterans Memorial, Columbus Dispatch has some hints at the best viewing spots:
Berliner Park and the Whittier Peninsula are no longer recommended, said Mike Collins, executive director of Red, White & Boom.
Good locations include areas north of Broad Street — such as Long and Spring streets, and Nationwide Boulevard — and Arena District parking lots.
This year, 400,000 people are expected to attend the Red White and Boom Fireworks show in Columbus Ohio.
