The new proposal for President Obama’s Lightbulb standards have been announced. Let’s add lightbulbs to the list of government intrusions that we’re now facing. President Obama, apparently not busy enough with Iran, North Korea, the Economy, Healthcare, the Mortgage Crisis, Iraq, or Afghanistan, has decided that new federal lighting standards also need to be part of the administrations agenda.

Now I’m all about being good stewards over this planet, and I’m not advocating simply wasting energy for the sake of wasting energy, but does anyone really think that it’s the role of the federal government to get involved in what kind of lightbulbs we use in our homes? Didn’t the government intrude enough when they began regulating how many gallons of water per flush a toilet can use? Aren’t liberals always claiming that government should stay out of the bedroom, but apparently it’s okay for them to peek into the bathroom?

According to The Washington Post, President Obama made a statement regarding the issue at a White House with the Secretary of Energy present.

“I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses,” the president said, standing alongside Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the White House.

I find it interesting, and by interesting I mean hypocritical, for the President to tout the new energy standard as a way for American citizens to save money on energy costs when he has supported the passage of the Cap and Trade legislation that amounts to nothing more than a tax increase on the American people. Maybe he thinks that the new federal lighting standards will offset the costs of the Cap and Trade legislation.

The video below shows one of my new favorite people in Congress, Representative Ted Poe from Texas’ second congressional district, hits the nail right on the head regarding these new compact fluorescent bulbs which are being phased in. It sure doesn’t seem that these bulbs are too environmentally friendly, but hey, what do I know, I’m just a blogger.

The new Obama lightbulb standards are nothing more than another attempt by the government to intrude into our lives. Like I said, I’m all for taking care of the planet, especially if it saves me a buck or two, but do we really need the government being the ones to decide this for us? What do you all think?
