Some have called them the “new” Juan and Eva Peron of Argentina. They are, of course, Cristina Fernandez, the President of Argentina and her husband, Nestor Kirchner, the ex-President of Argentina. Mid-term elections have just deprived her of control of both houses of Congress and delivered a humiliating blow to her once very popular husband. Read more below, see photos and a video.

As I look at that picture above, I am hearing the chant of “Evita! Evita!” in my head, aren’t you? But some in Argentina are saying that the romance between President Cristina Fernandez and the voters of Argentina unlike Eva Peron, has been strained almost since the day she came to office. In fact, she’s really getting on most folks’ last nerve.

Just like here in the United States, the loss of control in Argentina’s congress will limit President Christina Fernandez’ options in the second half of her term. That, of course, was a shocker to most political onlookers since she came into office on her very popular ex-president husband’s coat tails. But, it was the utter failure of her husband – the former President of the country for gosh sakes – to win a seat representing the Buenos Aires region that was especially stunning.

Why am I experiencing Deja Vu?

When she first took office, Christina Fernandez very quickly became caught up in a long and heated fight with the country’s farmers over a proposed tax increase on grain exports and tried to regain the support of the working class with populist steps such as nationalizing pension funds and an airline. Gee, this all sounds familiar. All the while, though, the economy in Argentina has been in the tank because of ongoing claims that the government has mis-reported escalating inflation rates. Hmmm. Maybe they need a stimulus to help things there?

Now after this mid-term loss, President Fernandez is expected to make what some are calling “significant cabinet reshuffle” this week. For nearly all the 18 months she has been power, she has faced horrible approval ratings, hovering at about 30 per cent. These two have been accustomed to passing laws in Argentina’s congress with ease, and though they are defiant now, they are going to have to negotiate with their political enemies to get anything done in the next couple of years for the people of Argentina.

Fernandez/Kirchner fatique? Sounds like it. If the Kirchner clan had plans of creating a political dynasty of sorts, it most likely won’t be happening with these two. Thank God. You can see more photos and a video of Nestor Kirchner and Cristina Fernandez Political Fight below.
