The Obama’s are planning to spend part of their summer vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. However, some of the residents aren’t quite sure if the First Lady is going to fit in. They’re calling Michelle Obama “Ghetto Girl”. Read more below, see photos and a really strange video.
In the land of Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry, and Barney Fwank - the rich, the famous, the powerful - lies an incredible undercurrent of elitism that is simply stunning. It seems the affluent, high society Black community in the popular New England vacation spot have no idea what to make of the Obamas coming to town, even resorting to calling Michelle Obama “basically a ghetto girl”. Ouch!
So it seems that Black folks in America can be VERY class-conscious. According to a recent New York magazine many of the Blacks in Martha’s Vineyard are upset that The One and his bitter wife are coming for a vacation. Apparently, they simply have way too much class to share their little island.
“Obama is more a man of the people,” says a Vineyarder who’s part of black high society. “He doesn’t seem to identify with affluent black people. His wife definitely doesn’t; she is basically a ghetto girl. That’s what she says—I’m just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasn’t reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what they’ll do about that.”
Well. Alrighty then.
As you can imagine, many Blacks not on the Vineyard, are outraged at calling MO ghetto. In fact, some are completely stunned that “bourgeois Blacks” would be so unkind to the most important and influential couple on the planet if not the universe.
I guess they have short memories. Because about that Michelle Obama Ghetto Girl comment? All you have to do is go here, here, or here to look at just a few of her media makeovers which succeeded in turning her into that ‘glamour icon’ she is today.

What gets me about Michelle is she seems very snobby and other then being married to Barry, what else has she done for anyone. I remember watching the 2004 Liberal Democrat Convention and her coming out to introduce him. And she said, “my baby daddy.” I thought ‘ghettocrat’.
Would you like to be a fly on the wal to hear how she talks when the media is not around.

well she comes from a working class family, but has a princeton and legal education and runs her own though up program she got a university to house. I mean that says something for her. And I can attest Yankee towns in New England are pretty backwards on a lot of race issues, or even to any stranger. The locals don’t really care for the rich tourists you know. I agree she needs to get behind a few or one issue and develop it. I thought it was mental health, but maybe I was wrong or she’s not too effective at it. She is in a growth phase right now. I don’t think anyone can live in the White House and not be profoundly moved by the weight of all the American history and current responsibilities. I think she will mature further and possibly come into her calling.

So what are all these rich black people? REPUBLICANS?
July 1st, 2009 at 6:34 am
No Klo some are members of congress. there are blacks in this country that don’t buy into the lies about the Republicans from the Democrats.
It was the Republicans that passed the Civil Rights Act. That is because there were more Rep that voter yes then Dems. Including Al Gore Sr and Robert KKK Byrd.
The Obama got where they are because they worked hard but they are snobby about it and she is such a bitter person.

I totally agree with the “Ghetto Girl” comment. She doesn’t come off as friendly but as an angry black woman. I see a low class woman with a high class education who doesn’t have very good people skills. Who wears $500 shoes to help the poor and homeless? I mean, really?

Really people. Do we have real issues to deal with in this country rather than giving ill-wishing comments the time of day? There will always be enemies and not everyone will like you. Tell me which of you is a fashionista that has made no fashion mistakes? Every person who rises past what they began as has had a makeover. As for bitter, well some things are hard to get past. We are all works in progress; not one perfecr soul. Ghetto girl? Well who is a snob now (and a petty name caller)? Is poverty a crime? Should she be ashamed of who she was(if she was one). Who named all of you judge and jurror? Grow up and focus on real issues that confront our country today.

Of course she’* I agree that, as a First , there are standards to uphold…when has she not? CLEARLY, the “baby daddy” comment was made for the critics, and they fell right into the trap. She is highly educated and is cordial (to say the least). THat’s the least that’s expected. Besides, she’s not running for president. First Lady doesn’t mean she has to be seen in a two-piece suit and pearls everytime she makes a public appearance, either, and to “reach out to the poor doesn’t mean an individual has to “wear their worst”. This tennis ball match with approval of her wardrobe and speech is so knit-picky! So, as the first Black First Lady of America, you’re gonna see a lot of “firsts” established in the White House; she’s from a different background than every other Lady yet. If that makes her “ghetto”, then, it’s clear what the objective is…

I am appalled by some of these ridiculous and ignorant comments about First Lady Obama. As women we should support her and encourage her. She is the first African American woman to hold this title and position and for the American people and specially women to critize and speak negatively about her is repulsive. I have found her to be genuine and authentic and that is sometimes frightening to people who have no ability to recognize or appreciate her authenticity. The truth is that they aren’t comfortable with themselves.

I totally agree with Lady Hubbs, really people Michelle Obama has class she is genuine and not afraid to be herself. I guess she’s not really the “robot” type and people seem to want her to be that, as far as I see she represents 80-90% of American women, the average lady who changed her circumstances and look where she is now. If she chooses not the be an aristocratic snob well good for her. And by the way for all of you who worry about what she’s wearing grow up, even children wear what they want and there is nothing wrong with her shorts… they aren’t even SHORT! What should she wear to a hike in Arizona… a pencil skirt and cardigan?

Why are so many blacks getting so angry??She is a ghetto girl, I am a ghetto girl and proud of it!…so what! The boogie heffa that made the remark is a descendant of slaves…sharecroppers, it don’t get much more ghetto than that…but as blacks I thought we were proud of where we came from…even our Black National Anthem encourages us to be proud of where we came FROM…and look forward to what we can be…. Unfortunately a lot of blacks are confused. When they get to a point where they think they will not be called the N word anymore…they think they can declassify themselves…NOT! You are still a N word to the KKK, the skinheads and no matter what you do you will never be better in their eyes. Mrs. Obama, Madam First Lady came from hardworking, Americans, who were of modest means and happened to be African American. How dare all of you get angry at “ghetto girl”. I wear it with pride. Now the heffa that said it, meant it as demeaning…but it can only be demeaning if you are ashamed of where you came from…
