Just when you think Barbara Boxer couldn’t get any more small minded or petty, then stories like this come out. During hearings yesterday regarding the New Orleans levee situation, Brigadier General Michael Walsh repeatedly answered questions with a “yes ma’am” or “no ma’am”. At some point Ms. Boxer stopped him and said “Could you say ’senator’ instead of ‘ma’am?’ It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I’d appreciate it.” Of course, anyone knows military personnel know that they are conditioned to respond with “yes sir/ma’am” and by doing so they are showing respect.
Seems to me you have to be highly insecure or a complete douche to say something like this. I know a few lawyers who insist that you add the Esq. when you send them a letter or correspondence, which I find highly dubious. I’m sure we’ve all known that professor or doctor who insists on being called “Dr. So and So” but at least they really have earned something. Respect is something that must be earned, and Boxer has done nothing to earn her title except dupe a few weak minded Californians to vote for her. It is also somewhat ironic that she is chastising a man who has worked very hard to get his title and she doesn’t seem to show any respect for him by calling him General. Of course her contempt for the military is well known, so I’m not surprised.

You are awesome! I have called all the recruiting branches in Nacogdoches, Texas and thanked them for their service. I told them how honored I am everytime a US Serviceman addresses me as “ma’am”.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Sir is OK but a lot of women have a problem beng called ma’am. My wife hates it.
Boxer ain’t in the military and I suppose that she has the right to request to be addressed any way she wishes. So what?
Of course, if this had been some REPUBLICAN senator, someone you like, there would be no problem. You hate Boxer. Here is a list of people that rightpundits.com hates most:
Barbara Boxer
Jimmy Carter
Barak Obama
Michelle Obama
etc.
This is pretty much what your little web site is about–hate. You hate this, and you hate that. Everything is filtered thru your hate. But then you say, oh no, it is the LIBERALS who are filled with hate.
Well, I am a liberal and I at least know one thing I hate. I hate you.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:40 am
This is hilarious! Anyone who has ever been in or around the military knows that when a senior officer is addressed by his/her RANK instead of “Sir” or “Ma’am”, it means the addressor stands in contempt of the senior. By demanding to be called “Senator” every other breath, Boxer is requiring the military to treat her contemptously. Can anyone say, “Methinks thou dost protest too much”?
June 18th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Man, chill out Klo. Disagreement doesn’t have to beget hate.
Boxer is being a bit petty here, although I do agree that many women hate the term “ma’am”. Plus, she did make the request in a respectful manner without seeming overly condescending.
Also, I don’t really understand how those professors and doctors you mentioned have “really earned something” while Boxer hasn’t. She did more than “dupe a few weak minded Californians to vote for her”, she became a Senator. Whether you care for her personally or not, you can’t become senator without being respected and hard-working.
I do find it a bit snooty to insist on a titular address in conversation, but then again that’s really the same thing as the military “sir/ma’am” protocol.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:45 am
By the way, Klo, the honorific “Ma’am” is a contraction of the French term “Ma Dame”, which in English means “My Lady”. Every time you use the term Ma’am, you are equating the woman with Royalty. Of course, if you don’t think your wife is a lady, go ahead and call her “Miss”, as if you were married to a prepubescent child.

I agree with you totally.
Check out my take, and stick around for more good content.

“Sir is OK but a lot of women have a problem beng called ma’am. My wife hates it.”
Who gives a sh*t ?
“Boxer ain’t in the military and I suppose that she has the right to request to be addressed any way she wishes. So what?”
Yeah, and the general has the right to tell her to go f*ck herself also.
Whats your point ?
“Of course, if this had been some REPUBLICAN senator, someone you like, there would be no problem. You hate Boxer. Here is a list of people that rightpundits.com hates most:
Barbara Boxer
Jimmy Carter
Barak Obama

What the f*ck does this have to do with anything other than the fact you’ve got real small mind ?
“This is pretty much what your little web site is about–hate. You hate this, and you hate that. Everything is filtered thru your hate. But then you say, oh no, it is the LIBERALS who are filled with hate.”
And yet every statement of yours here is not laced wuith but actually some of the dumbest most hateful ignorant crap I’ve ever heard
“Well, I am a liberal and I at least know one thing I hate. I hate you.”
You’re not a liberal.
You’re just a f*ckin idiot, in every sense of the word because you admitt that at the least you only know one thing.
I used to be a liberal and know for a fact that you’d of been cast out and asked not to speak for us due to your ignorant hate.
Rhayader, the military has its protocols for a reason. Boxer is not of that protocol nor is she entitle to be treated as such as demanded in the military. Its about establishing discipline. If anything she should be serving this man dinner on her and licking his feet.
As soon as she asked to be called senator I would of said “yes ma’am” or apply the “Ms” that was so prevalent amongst the women libbers back in the day.
Seems to me like her pantys are in a crusty bunch here.
I could see it if you were addressing her as such ” Senator Boxer, would you say its true that…” and then during the course of the conversation to follow its by no means disrespectful to answer or acknowledge with ma’am.
Oh, and by the way, I left the “E” in Mickey out on purpose when spelling my name because I can tell when people are speaking if they’re using that E or not. It pi$$es me off to no end.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:09 am
Actually, if somebody called me senator, I’d be insulted.

Actually, if somebody called me senator, I’d be insulted.
Hah, nice one L!
Rhayader, the military has its protocols for a reason. Boxer is not of that protocol nor is she entitle to be treated as such as demanded in the military.
Yeah, true, although the incident in question didn’t take place in a military context. Whatever, like I said, I do find it a bit snooty to get all hot and bothered over an honorific.
But I do know from experience that many women consider the term “ma’am” to imply old age or something, and would prefer to be addressed by name instead. Perhaps in a social situation she would have asked that he call her Barbara instead of “ma’am”, which I wouldn’t find all that unreasonable.

Are you kidding. What do you me weak minded Californians? California is the 7th largest economy in the world. We did not get that way by being weak or stupid and did it in spit of all the things you thick skulls label as wrong with the state. Lastly, the General is a military man that has been around the block and should know protocal, period. You mock everything you do not like yet are mighty offended if someone steps on one of your toes…

I am a disabled American Veteran. I served three and one-half tours overseas. I do not hate anybody. I love America and that includes the freedom to express my opinion and to hear others express their opinions. I don’t always agree with the opinions of others, but I do not hate them for expressing their opinions. I am neither liberal nor conservative; I am an American. I invite those who would wear the moniker of liberal or conservative or moderate to practice patience, love and tolerance. Have a nice day.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Joe, the general was following protocol. Senator is not a rank so it is proper to call her Ma’am. If the senator was smart she would know this.
“I worked so hard to get that title.” Boxer is a servant of the people she was elected and earned nothing she just paid staff and had to shake hands.
I don’t get where politicians come off thinking they are better than people. They are servants, pure and simple, only there to represent the people that voted them in. A statement like this is a waste of time as I see it. She could have asked a real question in the amount of time it took her to spew that out.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:34 am
“Yeah, true, although the incident in question didn’t take place in a military context.”
Which is my point, but he is wearing a uniform and that how uniforms conduct themselves. She should be honored to have this man addressing her like a lady.
When our servicemen (whom I meet a lot of) call me sir I ask them not to. Although I appreciate it, the honor is mine, not theirs. Barby needs her head slapped.
Joe.
WTF are you talking about ? Get that way ? You have no economy, maybe a commercial infrastructure, thats it, but your economy is dysfunctional right now, the highest tax rate in the nation, more entitlement than any state, highest unemployment and are flat broke on your a$$es as a result of being WEAK AND STUPID !!

Why does California sent idiots to Washington?
Barbara Boxer should be ashamed to tell a General to what to call her. Please California do not return her or Diane to the Senate.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:29 am
[...] Boxer and every other useful idiot who goes by the title senator. Like Boxer has any idea about gaining or earning respect, she’s an embarrassment and a joke. Kudos to General Walsh for not coming unglued on her, [...]
June 18th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
California is trying to get bailed out last I checked.
Boxer, Pelosi, Fstein etc…
I assure tyoy the General knows protocol.
Boxer like Pelosi thinks too much of herself. She never did anything except get elected.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Boxer’s statement was just like when the juge in “A Few Good Men” made Jack Nicholson (Col. Jessep)address him as judge or your honor. “(And the witness will address this court as Judge or Your Honor. I’m quite certain I’ve earned it.”) This is what we get from a Hollywood trained Senator. Go Barby!

Klo don’t forget Commies, Marxist, Socialists, and 80% of the Lawyers in Congress and all other Anti American, Anti Capitalist, Anti Free Market, Idiots. The list is actually pretty long. No shortage of Morons.

he should call her JAP-skankwhore.
that’s what the little “maus” is.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
The actions of the, in my opinion, foul putrid disgusting Boxer broad towards that military man is one of many reasons I concluded that the USA demands the enactment of the Females as Property Movement.
That, to me, daffy dizzy Boxer broad is unworthy of even kissing the soles of any military persons’, either male OR female, boots.
The disgust I feel towards the Boxer broad are also tied into my anger at the ongoing class war within the USA.
Surely, again just my opinion, that Boxer wench is truly an enemy of the vast majority of Americans since she is either a part of the USA elite class and/or is a lackey of that elite class.
Too bad we can’t slap a privates’ stripes on Boxers shoulders and ship her off to the front lines in Afghanistan.
The Females as Property Movement knows how to handle mouthy disrespectful dames such as that Boxer thing. A few months at the county unowned female work farm would straighten her out.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:37 am
HAHAHAHA! YES! I AGREE 100%! YOU ARE MY HERO.
June 19th, 2009 at 2:53 am
Klo you are just a stupid stupid liberal.
June 19th, 2009 at 3:32 am
[...] Talk about out of touch and too concerned with one’s own status. Barbara Boxer scolded a Brigadier General during a Senate Committee meeting on Environment and Public Works discussing the restoration of the levee system following the damage from Hurricane Katrina. That is correct. Ever wonder why and how we have a “do nothing” political system? These people are more concerned about themselves than “We the People”. They are more concerned about how they are addressed than the subject matter at hand. Could Boxer be any more small minded or petty? [...]
June 20th, 2009 at 7:37 am
actually Boxer’s been around a long time and is a senior senator and she has a good website and dutifully sends out emails to her constituency’s about the nuts and bolts of new legislation and issues she is working on that is more detailed than average. Sometimes two people just don’t get along and they get into it at the hearings where they know sound bits are being made for AND against them. I wouldn’t write her off as just some lame california woman liberal. She is actually been better than average on work product.
