Nevada Senator John Ensign has apologized for having an affair with a member of his campaign staff and says he and his wife sought counseling and have since reconciled. Some, however, are saying the timing of his public announcement is interesting and suggests attempted blackmail may be at issue. Read more about it below, see photos of John and Darlene Ensign below, and a video.
Senator John Ensign of Nevada has long since been considered one of the young turks of the GOP, a rising fiscal and social conservative star, maybe even a potential presidential candidate. But not anymore. Not after admitting to cheating on his wife Darlene with a former campaign staffer who is married to one of his former legislative aides.
Ensign’s affair with campaign aide, Cindy Hampton, happened over several months last year when he and his wife were separated. When Ensign reconciled with his wife, he gave the aide a severance package, and the two parted ways. Or so he thought.
Some time later, reportedly, Ensign met with the husband of his lover, Doug Hampton, and had what some described as a ‘positive encounter’ although what that means in circumstances like this, I am not quite sure. Supposedly, Doug Hampton, the husband of John Ensign’s Affair, subsequently asked Ensign for a substantial sum of money — at which point John Ensign decided to make his affair public. Was John Ensign blackmailed? Maybe.
The news conference in which he admitted his affair was quickly pulled together and though he did not provide specifics of his affair, Ensign did say the following:
“Last year, I had an affair,” Ensign said. “I violated the vows of my marriage. It is the worst thing I have ever done in my life. If there was ever anything in my life that I could take back, this would be it. I take full responsibility for my actions.”
Yeah well. He also said that he deeply regretted the affair and that he remains committed to his Senate duties. Thankfully his wife Darlene was NOT standing by his side with a pale, strained, frozen face but she did release a statement saying:
“Since we found out last year, we have worked through the situation, and we have come to a reconciliation. This has been difficult on both families. With the help of our family and close friends, our marriage has become stronger.”
Ok. What else do wives of these kind of men usually say? It seems John Ensign has no plans to resign and I’m glad for that because he is a good senator. The potential threat of extortion or even attempted blackmail over John Ensign’s affair? It seems to have been confirmed by several sources though we, at Right Pundits, have no real idea one way or the other. We’ll let some one else sort out all the sordid details of extortion, blackmail and John Ensign’s affair.
Update: John Ensign’s affair with Cindy Hampton, and the sordid details that surround it just get more strange. Now there’s a report that John Ensign’s parents paid Doug and Cindy Hampton $96,000 AFTER being told of the affair by their son. Their reason for doing this? John Ensign’s parents decided to make the gifts “out of concern for the well-being of long-time family friends during a difficult time”. Strange don’t you think? Why would the parents of John Ensign give a $96,000 “gift” to the other woman and her family? After his affair, was John Ensign Blackmailed? Again, we have no way of knowing the truth in this strange tale. But clearly, it’s coming out.

As far as I’m concerned, this guy’s sex life and marriage should be his own business. Of course, he has made a political career by publicly decrying the private lives of others — Bill Clinton and Larry Craig in particular — so he deserves every bit of ridicule and loss of stature that comes his way. The guy is a flat-out hypocrite.

Are those calling for Patrick Kennedy to resign ( http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=4090 ) also calling for Ensign to resign?
June 17th, 2009 at 6:28 am
Need DETAILS here.
Was there oral sex? bondage? wide stances? Cigars? Leather? Anal? Any video documentation? Exactly when, where, and how did Sen. Ensign violate his marital vows?
Need Ken Star engaged immediately.

Just another scumbag politician who came within about four and half inches of a good career.

Rob.
I fail to see the parallels between Ensign and Kenedy.
Help me out here.

Rob apparently doesn’t understand the concept of hypocrisy – but then I don’t understand how my television works and I stil watch it.
The guy should have remembered this simple rule -
Republicans = Money
Democrats = Sex

Democrats pay republicans to watch them have sex ?

Democrats pay republicans to watch them have sex ?
That all depends on the Democrat and Republican in question, doesn’t it?
June 17th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Well, I can see democrats paying anyone to watch them get it on.
Maybe a “green sex” expo or something like that.
Ya know, how to save the earth by using carbon friedly toys, edible condoms etc..
hey, its definitely the left that likes to put their sexualities on display and claim all the variations as unique in themselves deserving special considerations.
Hell, they came this close > < to almost defdending Nambla.
I didnt choose to be a heterosexual, can I have a handout ?

At a time when the Republican party is spinning, the “best” the party has to offer needs to fess up way before alleged extortion. This is as bad as John Edwards, both are not as bad as Senator Larry Craig, and there are more Republicans under a cloud than just a stray democrat with his money frosting with the Budweiser.
John Edwards had no right pursuing the presidency. Same for John Ensign. Not because of the infidelity as much as the Republican witch hunt on Clinton. IF it is their personal business, which it is, and if the Republicans didn’t spend over 50 million useless dollars studying a stain on a dress, then John Ensign would be able to run for president. So would John Edwards. The Republicans set the bar. We’ll all agree to it, but it is SO disingenuous to exploit Christian people for votes knowing that a presidential run is going to expose hypocrisy anyway. With or without alleged blackmail.
Rhayader has it right. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Haven’t we ALL had enough of the hypocrisy from both parties? George W. Bush has a good marriage, it’s his joke about “WMD’s” not being behind the curtain that he should be investigated for. That is, of course, if you want to be logical and not just find a knee-jerk excuse for another Republican cutting at the foundation of his own party

I want HONEST, ETHICAL politicians! I don’t care what party you represent, if you can’t be honest to your own family, loved ones, you surely won’t be honest to Americans! Step aside Mr. Ensign! It is time to clean house in 2010! Sick of dishonest politicians!
June 17th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Like many, I don’t really think it’s my business to know what two consenting adults do behind closed doors; however, republicans do indeed hold themselves to some sort of higher standard of behavior, based on their devout religious beliefs and their deep concern for what they perceive as the debasing of American family values by their more liberal fellow citizens.
That said, I can only assume that the senator’s wife couldn’t satisfy the senator’s thirst for the levels of depravity and perversion that his lovely and talented “campaign aid,” Cindy, could willingly provide.
It’s amazing that right-wing airtime/blogtime is spent on things of a sexual nature while recent episodes of violence committed by so-called right-wingers have attracted only passing acknowledgment and comment.
We live in a sick and twisted society with hypocrites on both sides.

it is absurd to say that those who say do not be unfaithful to your spouse should be held to a higher standard than those who do not say that.
they should be held to the same standard.
should he resign? i do not know. i would not vote for him.

it is absurd to say that those who say do not be unfaithful to your spouse should be held to a higher standard than those who do not say that.
Yeah I agree with that Lisa. More to the point though, I say it’s absurd to be trying to hold politicians (or anybody else) to some sort of “standard” regarding their private lives. It’s totally subjective and irrelevant.
What matters is the ability to govern, not the ability to have a happy marriage.

Lisa R;
“Rhayader has it right. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
I’m tired of this bullsh*t position.
Look, I’ll never say I’m perfect but that doesnt mean that I’m not allowed to point out bad behavior on someone elses part.
And by the way Lisa. Clinton lied, got it ?
“It’s amazing that right-wing airtime/blogtime is spent on things of a sexual nature while recent episodes of violence committed by so-called right-wingers have attracted only passing acknowledgment and comment.”
Yeah, you mean like Tiller getting 24/7 airtime and soldiers dying at the hands of leftist lunatics going practically unheard of ?
“republicans do indeed hold themselves to some sort of higher standard of behavior, based on their devout religious beliefs and their deep concern for what they perceive as the debasing of American family values by their more liberal fellow citizens.”
Sooooo, liberals get to screw around and not be held accountable ?
Gimme a break.

“What matters is the ability to govern, not the ability to have a happy marriage.”
Maybe, but I’ll bet you’ll lie to me if you’ll lie to your wife.
It goes to character, private life or not.

I’m tired of this bullsh*t position. Look, I’ll never say I’m perfect but that doesnt mean that I’m not allowed to point out bad behavior on someone elses part.
Just to clarify, my position was that while normally I would say we should let Ensign sort out his marriage problems privately, he has opened himself to attack by making a career out of making public spectacles of other politicians’ sex lives. I was talking about the ordeal from Ensign’s perspective, not saying that none of us has the right to question his behavior.
I’ll bet you’ll lie to me if you’ll lie to your wife.
Yeah I see what you’re saying, but if that’s true let’s go after the lie to the people, not the lie to the wife. I mean, politicians certainly do enough lying as part of their official duties; those are the lies that have an effect on the citizenry. Let’s go after that stuff, and leave the closed door things behind closed doors. These guys have a right to a private life — unless, like I said above, they deem it appropriate to publicize the private lives of others.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
They were on a break! lol
It’s true though, that they were separated and close to divorce at the time of the affair. I know that doesn’t mean a lot to some of you, but it makes all the difference to me.
Further, Bill Clinton committed perjury, John Edwards gets a chick pregnant while he is supposedly on good terms with his terminally ill wife. Big difference between them and Ensign.
And Micky, apparently his wife knew about it. He was honest with her when they got counseling, and they worked it out. Just because he slept with another woman when he and his wife were on their way out of the marriage doesn’t mean he will lie to the American people.
Also remember that Abraham Lincoln slept with a prostitute. Many would consider this morally wrong. Did it make him a bad president? The answer is clear.

Justin:
You forgot about Elliot Spitsers affair with a hooker. Yet hands down the president with the most affairs was pretty boy JFK. And can you believe his brother bobby had affairs with Jackie Kennedy after JFK died. It’s all in the blood of that family there spoiled so they think they can do anything they want. I especially like Caroline Kennedy saying”I want this job” and is it just me or does she remind you of anyone “dady I want a golden goose”. And if I had to say the guy who came in second it would be easily Thomas Jefferson with his slave. Or Andrew Jackson when he was a small town lawyer he invited hookers to there Christmas party. Or how about FDR having affairs around washington granted Eleanor looked like a man, but still that doesn’t explain Kennedy.
