Web Site Kicks Sand in Faces of GIs in Iraq Asking for Mats to Ease Hardship of Sleeping on GroundTuesday, January 23, 2007
An American GI assigned to one of the harshest posts in Iraq had a simple request last week for a Wisconsin mattress company: send some floor mats to help ease the hardship of sleeping on the cold, bug-infested ground.
What he got, instead, was a swift kick from the company’s Web site, which not only refused the request but added insult to injury with the admonition, “If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.”
Army Sgt. Jason Hess, stationed in Taji, Iraq, with the 1st Cavalry Division, said he emailed his request to Discount-mats.com because he and his fellow soldiers sleep on the cold ground, which contains sand mites, sand flies and other disease carriers.
In his email, dated Jan. 16, 2007, he asked the Web-based company, registered to Faisal Khetani, an American Muslim of Pakistani descent:
“Do you ship to APO (military) addresses? I’m in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Iraq and we are trying to order some mats but we are looking for ships to APO first.”
On the same day, Hess received this reply:
“SGT Hess,
We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.

Discount-Mats.com”Khetani on Monday told FOX News that the person responsible for the email reply had been fired. The Web site, meanwhile, has been temporarily taken down.
Hess emailed that he has since found two mat suppliers willing to ship to an APO address in Iraq.
I would hope that Discount-mats.com would quickly go out of business due to a boycott. If you want to do business in the US (a business tht would probably be next to impossible to set up in his own country due to a patronage system), then you had better not be insulting our troops. I wish Sgt. Hess had indicated which countries would ship to the soldiers, so those businesses could be rewarded with more American business.
Perhaps we can all email our good friends at Dicount-mats.com and let them know our displeasure - oh right, they took down their site.
I guess I have to also wonder why our troops aren’t provided with mats? My father had a cot while he was trapsing throught the jungles being bombarded and strafed daily in the South Pacific, and in this day and age, we can’t get beds to our troops?
Michelle Malkin had a piece on this yesterday. Iraqi and American soldiers sleeping on the ground en masse to keep warm. Not a good way to keep up morale, Mr. Bush.

Well isn’t that something! Arrgh! Take American money, but spit on our Troops. Hypocrite! Among other choice words…*&%$#
The owners politics notwithstanding, for God’s sake this shouldn’t even be an issue. Why should they have reach out to any company and request mats???? They should already be supplied with all they need!
This is slightly similar to the the story that I just posted yesterday. A British Soldier and his family were banned from entering Harrods, (on Poppy Day no less!) The owner of Harrods, is of course Mohammed al fayed.

Velvethammer - I responded to your post about Herrods. I haven’t figured out this cross-referenceing to blogs yet, but I whole-heartedly agree with your post!

MBT- You have inadvertently solved a mystery that has had me stumped for years. Now I know where all of those Pakistani and Indian owned motels get their crappy mattresses from. Yes, the ones that feel like they’re stuffed with old Slurpee cups and discarded turbans. Thanks!

Joe -I will have to take your word for it - I haven’t spent too much time in Pakastani-owned hotels lately - I’m afraid of roaches.
Keep in mind that I used to drive by the motel often on my way to work where the hijackers stayed in Maryland - lots of fleas and old matresses there too - still around too - no historic plaque there, however, for some reason!

Without knowing more, it seems to me the company took the right action and they did it quickly too. No investigation and endless wavering to protect the employee. Sounds like a low-level clerk in a department did something awful, and they took care of it.

this is a funny quote,
“This is a matter of free speech,” said Julie Enslow, an organizer with Peace Action Wisconsin in Milwaukee. “It is totally irresponsible for radio stations and bloggers to attack a person for his personal political views.” …
and also,
“Othman Atta, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, said he would fault the worker for his lack of tact but defended his right to speak his mind.
“If you look at the polls, his opinion is reflected by a majority of Americans now,” Atta said. “In the United States, everyone one is free to speak their opinion.”
um … no … hello … you can’t speak your mind when on the job … well you can, but they can fire you for it. for example i can’t start talking about my students online … i might even face legal action for doing that …
can you imagine the uproar that would ensue if i told my students that in my opinion bush was an idiot for going to war in iraq?
i’d fire the employee

McCain-
The guy says that he fired the employee, but who knows, maybe it was Faisal Khetani himself that sent the email.
It’s also not a stretch for me to believe that Mr. Khetani’s employee, if there was one (Khetani could just be a broker that has orders drop-shipped instead of actually having an inventory), might have had reason to think that the boss was cool with that kind of attitude.
Anyway, if you would like to send Mr. Khetani a love letter for allegedly firing the alleged employee, here is a contact list. Oh, and don’t worry about legalities McCain, they are all available in the public domain. Cheers.

Heidi at Euphoric Reality has quite the eye opening article regarding Faisal Khetani.

I have updated my related article, with the link.

It never occurred to any of you to wonder why a soldier would be soliciting for mattresses, sleeping pads, etc., from a civilian source rather than from his own military?
You guys have the worst case of tunnel vision I’ve ever seen.
Update: How come we never heard from any of you about the appalling conditions at Walter Reed and the outrageous neglect of our wounded heroes there? Again, where were you? Sniffing around Hillary Clinton instead of doing your job.
