The Oklahoman, a daily newspaper in Oklahoma, has printed an editorial cartoon that shows Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor hanging from a tree like a piƱata as President Barack Obama hands out bats to Republican members of Congress. President Obama is wearing a sombrero.

Many groups are calling the cartoon racist and/or sexist. For example, at the Huffington Post, they quote the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, which stated through a spokesperson, “Not funny; actually stupid and damaging. A picture speaks louder than words and that cartoon sends a message to women of all ages: ‘Back off. Know your place. Or we’ll take a stick to you and teach you a lesson.'”

You can see the cartoon below after the jump.

The cartoon is perhaps a bit inaccurate, as Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican descent, and the pinata and sombrero are Mexican icons. Some would argue that lumping Sotomayor in with what Americans would view as “Mexican” shows a lack of respect for Latin American cultures. Also, hanging a federal judge from a tree is a bit disrespectful.

Of course, Sotomayor is herself being accused of racism from some members of the right. As I stated here, I thought Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh were misguided in calling her racist, because the right should not be getting into politically correct name-calling.

I personally think the cartoon is a little misguided, and not very funny. Racist? Sexist? I don’t think so. This is an editorial cartoon meant as a satire. George W. Bush has been portrayed as a mentally disabled cowboy. Reagan’s senility was often the subject of jokes. Are these racist? Age-ist? Cowboy-ist? Let it go.
