Juan L. Sotomayor is the brother of Obama’s Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. He is an accomplished medical doctor practicing in New York. Read his biography below, see a photo and watch a video.
Setting aside her judicial temperment and practices and whether they are appropriate for the Supreme Court, it is clear that Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor and her family work hard and have accomplished much. Her mother is a nurse and her brother, Juan Sotomayor, is a practicing physician in New York.
Juan L. Sotomayor was born in New York City and is the older brother of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, currently Barack Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court.
Dr. Sotomayor is a graduate of the CCNY Center for Biomedical Education and completed his medical degree at the New York University in 1981. He completed his pediatric sub-specialty training at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, under Dr. Frank Oski and did a fellowship in Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. He then became an attending physician in pulmonology at Wayne State University and was the director of the apnea program and the pulmonary function laboratory.
Since 1988 he has been in private practice specializing in pulmonary and asthma diseases in the Syracuse area. He is also an assistant professor in Pediatrics and Allergy at the University Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. He has also received a number of resident teaching awards in the past. He has also published articles on pulmonary diseases and is currently doing clinical research studies.
Dr. Juan L. Sotomayor currently resides with his wife Tracey, who is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, and their 3 children in Liverpool, New York. They are avid Syracuse University Basketball fans, and follow many other sports especially golf. And according to published information about their children, their daughter Kiley is an avid horse rider while her twin brothers, Conner and Corey who were born in Korea are busy creating havoc!

Wow because of his story, shouldn’t he be the head of some hospital or Surgeron General or the CDC or American Idol or some important place. I am sure he is the only doctor like his sister that has ever faced obstables in their way getting somewhere in life.
We have become a country that thinks we should all have the samethings in life and that life should be fair.
I know this is petty, but he looks like a cab driver not a doctor.

‘Looks like a cab driver not a doctor.’ So, can I judge you by your grammar. If so, I would say you are an ignorant hick from the South or Midwest.

Kels,
I was just doing what liberals do and judge people on what I see. It is a good thing he is not a republican because then he would be a bad doctor. Since he had the same struggles as Sonia had, I just thought he should be given more then the rest of us not based on any merit but on struggle alone. That is what you liberals do. To me he looks like a cab driver that became a doctor.
Yes I am from the south and proud of it. You must be from the northeast or the west. Either way, you are still a liberal. But I am sure you have never made a grammatical error in your life. We are not worthy to be in your presence.
Forgive us Kels!

I read the comment that Dr. Juan Sotomayor looks like a cab driver. I am sure the person who made that commenbt was a jealous ignorant white man from the south. Don’t get angry because this Dr. has made a better life for himself in the white man’s world.

Inetta,
You would make a better life for yourself if you stopped focusing on race.

Being an man from the south and reading the comments back and forth its really mind blowing! Everyone in their life has struggled in some form or fashion no matter what part of the world you live in. Yes, this family is puerto rican and they came from a housing project but yet decided not to raise their own family in a housing project. I find it absoultely amazing and it reminds me of my family. Brother is an attorney, sister is a Pediatric Surgeon, younger sister just graduated as one of the 2nd classes to receive a Doctorate in Nursing and I am an OB/GYN. We came from the ghetto as well and their were whites, blacks, indians, and asians in our neighborhood! I truly think race is only an important factor if you make it. My mom was a single one like most of the other women in the neighborhood, but yet she raised us (in the south) to look past one’s race. Sure it would have been great if we went to a HBCU, but yet out mom would not allow for that because she did not want us to be swayed by any views of the other students. She wanted us to experience a more diverse atmosphere than that.

George, the fact that you buy into the term “liberals” shows that you are just another partisan hack.
Since when did the word “liberal” become an insult? I wonder what that word means to you…
The bitter acrimony spewed by those of close-minded leanings serves only to drive our country further apart. In your limited mentality, you and those who think like you stall progress in our great country.
Having gone through medical training myself, I respect Dr. Sotomayor for his extensive training in the art of healing. Not only did he attend medical school at a highly respected institute, he did a fellowship at one of the best Children’s Hospitals in America.
Do not denigrate a man who worked so hard to help children. He deserves respect.
What have you done?
