Duncan D. Hunter

California Congressman Duncan D. Hunter is one of the young, rising stars of the Republican party. Hunter represents San Diego, CA, for the 52nd Congressional District. Some of his conservative views have been in the news lately.

Rep. Hunter has criticized President Obama’s plans, or the lack of them, to close the Guantanamo detention facility and house detainees within the United States. He has been an out-spoken opponent of Obama’s budget, and acting on his campaign promise, he has introduced legislation to speed-up the completion of the planned border-fence-system. If you are a proponent of strong border control, you’ll want to view the video below and hear Congressman Hunter’s ideas for achieving that goal. In the November election, Hunter won 72 percent of the vote in his San Diego district, a city that has some of the most pressing border-safety issues in the Nation.

Duncan D. Hunter Biography

Duncan D. Hunter was born on December 7, 1976 in San Diego, California. He is 32 years old. His parents are Duncan L. Hunter and Lynne Layh Hunter. He has one brother, Robert Samuel (Sam) Hunter. Duncan was raised in San Diego and if his name seems familiar, perhaps it is because his father Duncan L. Hunter was the U.S. Congressman for San Diego’s 52nd District from 1981 until January 2009. Duncan D. Hunter replaced his father in that Congressional seat.

Duncan graduated Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, CA. He holds a bachelors degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University. During his college years, Hunter formed Jones Hunter Web Design with a college friend and worked as a programmer and website designer for high-tech companies to pay for his tuition. After graduation, the business was sold and he went to work as an IT business analyst in San Diego.

On September 12th, 2001, the day after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, Duncan quit his job and, following in his grandfather’s footsteps, joined the Marines. He attended Officer Candidate School at Quantico and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in March 2002.
Hunter served in the 1st Marine Division during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. He completed a second tour in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 with Battery A, 1st Batallion, 11th Marines, and participated in Operation Vigilant Resolve. He was honorably discharged from active duty in September 2005, but remained in the Marine Corps Reserve. Lt. Hunter was promoted to Captain in 2006.

After his discharge, Hunter again entered the private sector and opened a residential home development company.

In a recent interview, Hunter said growing up in a famous political family was a “normal” experience for him:

There was nothing exceptional about growing up as the son of a congressman…

Duncan and his wife Margaret decided not to enter the political arena, saying “We just didn’t like the lifestyle…,” but after his Iraq tours and serving on the frontlines, he decided politics was the place he could bring about much needed changes for the military.

Shortly after announcing his bid to run for the U.S. Congress in 2007, Hunter was called back to active duty to serve in Afghanistan where he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. While in Afghanistan, he was prohibited from campaigning and relied on his wife, Margaret, family and friends to stand-in for him on the campaign trail.

Afghanistan was Hunter’s third tour of duty in the Global War on Terror. He was again honorably discharged from active duty in 2007.

Congressman Hunter has stated that he and his father, former Congressman Duncan L. Hunter, have very similar conservative political views, and both see defense issues as the Nation’s most important issue. As a freshman California Congressman, Hunter serves on the House Committee on Armed Services, House Panel on Defense Acquisition, the House Committee on Education and Labor and the House Republican Study Committee.

When home in California, the young Congressman enjoys surfing, snowboarding, skiing, off-roading and motorcycles. Duncan D. Hunter and his wife, Margaret, live in Alpine, California. They have three children, Duncan, Elizabeth and Sarah.
