Robert Edwin Lee was born on January 19, 1807. While he is known as a civil war general, he spent his later years as president of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Lee’s body is buried in Lee Chapel and a lot of his artifacts are on display there. That is why the university is going to mark Lee’s birthday in a very big way.

If you happen to be in Lexington today, at eleven in this morning, the Sons of Confederate Veterans will host a parade through downtown Lexington. At noon, the festivities move to Lee Chapel. There a service will be held to honor his 200th birthday. The day will end with a Robert E. Lee ball at the Hampton Inn. It is a ticketed event complete with period attire and civil war music.

The following video is a 7 ½ minute tribute to the life of Gen. Robert E. Lee.
