If you keep up at all with Hollywood, Bollywood and the Oscars, then you know that the British made movie Slumdog Millionaire was a favorite at the Academy Awards this year. The movie won eight Oscars as well as numerous other awards. It was directed by British director Danny Boyle and tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who wins the Indian version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’

Rubina Ali Qureshi is 9-years-old and her co-star, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail is 10-years-old. Both children live in the Mumbai slums and have returned there since they have completed their starring roles and publicity tours. They each play the youngest versions of the main characters of the movie. Rubina is the youngest version of Latika. The movie was filmed in the ghetto in order to get realistic depictions of the poverty and child cruelty that these children live with every day. Unfortunately, the story of children being victimized by their harsh living conditions is not foreign for these young stars. They each returned to their families, the slums, the abuse and the grinding poverty they left.

Its not without hope, however. Their families were paid for their work on the film. In addition, Danny Boyle has put them in school, for the first time, and made a commitment to see that they room and board is paid until they are 18-years-old. He set up a trust fund to ensure that their educational and monthly living expenses are paid. There is also a commitment that they will get a lump sum when they are 18 and assistance with furthering their education at that time.

Apparently, that hasn’t been enough for Rubina Ali’s father. Rafiq Qureshi and her uncle, Mohiuddin Queshi, apparently got word that a Middle Eastern Arab family had been touched by the story of Rubina and offered to adopt her. According to a ‘concerned family friend’, this contact got Rafiq to thinking about what his beautiful, bright-eyed daughter might be worth. His brother stated: “The child is special now. This is NOT an ordinary child. This is an Oscar child!”

The anonymous informer told the story to News of the World reporters who went undercover to meet with Rubina’s father and uncle to see what they could find out. The reporters posed as a wealthy Arab Sheikh family from Dubai. According to their report, they were offered the girl for the price of £200,000.

Our investigator made contact with Rafiq and said we had heard he was considering having Rubina adopted. He told Rafiq he was acting for a wealthy Arab sheik who wanted to take the youngster to live with him 2,000 miles away in Dubai.

Rafiq replied: “Yes, we are considering Rubina’s future.

“Why don’t you speak to my brother-in-law, Rajan, and he will discuss it with you? I will ask him to call you.”

After contacting us, Rubina’s uncle Rajan More – who speaks good English – confirmed: “Yes, we are interested in securing our girl’s future.

“Rubina’s life is miserable and she lives here with her stepmother. Most of the time she stays with me because she is not happy at her parents’ home.

“Obviously if you wanted to adopt we could discuss this, but her parents would also expect some proper compensation in return. We are talking of around £50,000 for this to happen.” In another phone call, father Rafiq coolly confirmed: “Whatever you have discussed with Rajan, I agree with. Whatever money is agreed by Rajan, I will accept.

“We can discuss everything about this deal when we meet. There’s a lot of interest in Rubina, she’s become very famous.”

Without querying the background, intentions, or even the names of Rubina’s prospective new parents, Rafiq arranged to meet us.

When News of the World reported that Rubina’s father was attempting to sale her for adoption, Rafiq was quite to make a public statement that he had never intended to sale his daughter and that the whole thing was just one big misunderstanding. He has said the reports are a conspiracy to ‘malign’ him. No, he’d never do such a thing!

Today, Rubina’s biological mother, Kursheed, has filed a complaint with the Nirmal Nagar police against the child’s father. She is separated from Rubina’s father and has attempted to get custody of her daughter in the past.

Soon after the news broke, Kursheed went to the residence of Rubina, located in a slum in Bandra, where she was involved in an altercation with the child artiste’s step mother.

“My husband and his wife are greedy people. I had told the producers of the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ to put her in a hostel if she did not want to stay with me,” Kursheed said.

It appears that greed and opportunism aren’t the exclusive properties of Western culture.
