Another embarrassing, failed appointment for President Barack Obama. The White House, hoping to favor Caroline Kennedy with the prestigeous U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican appointment, has been shut-down, according to a Vatican spokesman. See photos and a video below.

Reports vary on how the proposed-ambassadorship is happening. Senator John Kerry is reported to have asked President Obama to consider Caroline Kennedy for the ambassadorship. From there it is unclear whether the White House actually made the formal proposal to the Vatican. The Telegraph says the Vatican “has blocked the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as U.S. Ambassador.” Either the proposal was formally or informally presented, or leaked to get a Vatican response. Either way, it appears the Vatican answered with an emphatic ‘no.’

Kennedy’s support for abortion disqualified her from the position, said an Italian publication, Il Giornale. American Catholics are outraged. C. J. Doyle, the executive director of The Massachusetts Catholic Action League said: “It’s inappropriate to appoint someone who pretends to be a Catholic but rejects the fundamental teachings of the Church.”

Raymond L. Flynn, a former U.S. Vatican Ambassador said Kennedy’s appointment would be “a mistake.” It’s imperative, it’s essential that the person who represents us to the Holy See be a person who has pro-life values.”

Caroline Kennedy was an active supporter of Barack Obama, stumping with him during his presidential campaign. When Hillary Clinton vacated her New York Senate seat, Caroline threw her name and family heritage into the ring. At first, there was a stir of approval until the image of Camelot showed it’s shoddiness. The volunteer work that Kennedy said she spent her life intensely involved in was revealed to be only occasional involvement, and there was that matter of absolutely no experience in the political realm – and of course, the alleged specter of an illicit affair with New York Times publisher, Arthur Sulzberger. As the heat escalated, Kennedy withdrew from the race.

Barack Obama has referred to Ms. Kennedy as “one of my dearest friends.” Another friendly Kennedy face in the Senate would have been quite an achievement. The very public rejections of the daughter of John F. Kennedy and Jackie…that’s change she can believe in.

The Kennedy clan adheres to their own version of Catholicism. Locally, their churches benefit from the Kennedy money. Local priests apparently do not object to their decidedly non-Catholic and very public support of abortion. No doubt about it, money talks when you are a Kennedy, but maybe the Vatican sees it differently. In the meantime, Caroline’s uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, has declined comment, as has Senator John Kerry.

Caroline Kennedy as U.S. Vatican Ambassador would be huge for the daughter of President John F. Kennedy and wife Jacquelyn. The Vatican block of the Kennedy appointment speaks to the struggle the church is in with the 50%-plus Catholics who voted for Obama in the November election. The video below is a very young student interviewing Caroline Kennedy on the stump. It’s enlightening. Perhaps she has what it takes to be a politician after all. Click the photos below to enlarge.
