Kal Penn, who is perhaps best known as the pot-smoking Kumar of the film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, is joining the Obama administration as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison. He will be working under director Valerie Jarrett. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kal Penn will be leaving the medical drama House to work with Obama full-time. Penn reportedly will be primarily involved in dealing with Asian American issues and the arts community.

Kal Penn was a supporter of Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, and worked with several Asian American organizations to get out the vote for Obama. Penn also once taught a class at the University of Pennsylvania regarding Asian Americans and the media.

I have no idea what the Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison does, or if Kal Penn will do anything other than add another color to Obama’s rainbow coalition, but the idea of Kumar in the White House is just funny.

In Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanomo Bay, Penn’s character is imprisoned as a suspected terrorist and eventually meets George W. Bush and smokes pot with him. The movie satirized the Bush administration, portraying Bush’s minions as a bunch of rednecks who had no clue what they were doing.

Clearly, Harold & Kumar III: In Obama’s House is now in the works.
