Jiverly Wong, the alleged shooter in the deadly Binghamton, New York rampage that killed thirteen people on Friday, may have sent a package to News 10 Now in Syracuse right before his attack. A package that included photos of Jiverly Wong, a handwritten letter, Wong’s gun permit, and Wong’s driver’s license was received by the local news station today, three days after the deadly shooting rampage. Police are currently trying to determine the letter’s authenticity.

As we reported here, Jiverly Wong is the 42-year-old Vietnamese immigrant who went on a shooting rampage in the American Civic Association building in Binghamton, New York. He was an immigrant who moved several times in New York and California, and was divorced. He had been employed in a variety of jobs, most recently at Shop Vac. Media sites, as reported by Michelle Malkin, are trying to lay the blame for this tragedy at a variety of people’s feet.
The below letter, if authentic, suggests that Wong may have been just one deranged individual who felt persecuted by the police in particular, and the entire world in general. There’s no one to blame but Wong.
Please note that, as a recent immigrant, Wong’s English is poor and the letter is difficult to understand:

The first I want to say sorry I know a little English. I hope you understand all of this. Of course you need to know why I shooting? Mentally sick or not, you have no right to take other people’s lives to enable the deranged ideas about your life. You have committed the worst possible crime: suicide. Obviously this guy had some serious mental issues, and snapped. That doesn’t excuse what he did it all, but it’s clear that he was very, very sick. I guess, in a way, that’s comforting; extreme insanity should be the only explanation of a horrendous act like this. We can only hope that incidents like this point out the reality of mental illness, and there are people out there who will get help instead of falling off the edge.
For what it’s worth, I don’t doubt for a second that he was harassed by police. Some of his allegations remind me of those scum Philly police running around and robbing convenience stores owned by immigrants who speak little English.

Rhayader, he claims cops tried to ram his car, used ultramodern techniques to burn chemicals in his house, entered his house at night and harassed him 24/7 in California and then again in New York. You don’t doubt any of that for a second? He’s clearly seeing things.
Also, police generally “harass” those who deserve it. There are some bad apples on the police force, but they generally beat down those who have it coming.

I totally disagree with this one. The police generally harass those who have no means of retaliation or self-defense (again, I point to the recently revealed string of robberies perpetrated by the Philly PD). Our current law enforcement problems are systemic; it is absolutely not a case of a few “bad apples”. It’s the whole tree.
Occasionally there are some “good apples” that will actually report corruption and abuse by their fellow officers, but they are labeled as rats and transferred or terminated as soon as possible.

Rhayader, the much bigger problem in America is crime, not law enforcement corruption. We handicap the police too much in this country because liberals scream abuse every single time they touch someone. I would much rather live in a city that gives its cops a long leash (ie, New York City) and is safe, than a city that supports its criminals more than its police officers (ie, Oakland, which is statistically always ranked among the most dangerous places in America). New York got much safer when its politicians stood behind its cops instead of seeing them as so-called oppressors. The city is better off for it now.
As for the Philly case, the fact that they got caught destroys your own argument, doesn’t it?

They got caught because, luckily, one of the store owners was smart enough to stream his security camera footage to an off-site backup drive, so the cops couldn’t take the tapes like they had for the previous victims. That’s not exactly an example of the cops cleaning their own house. In fact, they are still trying to protect each other by lying about the amount of money stolen in that case.
It’s tough for me to get into the issue of police corruption and abuse without diving into the Drug War, which is the root cause of almost all of it. Still though, I think there is much too little accountability from police officers for their conduct. Between the blue wall of silence and their ultra-powerful unions, about the worst thing your typical officer can face is a suspension with pay.
Combining so much power with so little accountability is a recipe for disaster. Here is one example of what I am talking about:

If he had found out what was happening to him in time, this might have been prevented, since his letter does not reference the term, it can be assumed he did not find any of the sites in time to get help and peer support, which might have stopped this.

There is no denying that Wong’s actions and their absolutely devastating consequences cannot be labeled as anything but tragic and sickening. And after reading many many posted comments, I think it best to try to think of systemic ways to stop things like this happening in the future. Regardless of possible police persecution (which I will not comment on), it is clear from his letter that he indeed was extremely delusional and paranoid, quite psychotic. This in no way justifies his behaviour……..but we have GOT to look at our attitudes towards mental illness and our nation’s woefully inadequate health care system.
