Atlas Shrugged Movie 2

Who is John Gault?

Although “Atlas Shrugged” was written in 1957, the story it tells is resonating with readers today, especially in the economic climate that we currently find ourselves in; sales of the novel have recently been climbing and a movie would only increase the current demand. A movie would do well in today’s fast paced society where folks seldom take the time to read an 1,100 page epic novel.

Rumors have been rampant about who would play Dagny Taggart, the main character in “Atlas Shrugged”; Angelina Jolie had at one time expressed interest in playing the railroad executive who spends her days fighting against a government system which doesn’t allow for individual creativity and freedom. Other actresses are now rumored to be interested in the part now that “Atlas Shrugged” is on its way to becoming a blockbuster movie.

Ayn Rand, who wrote the novel, was a Russian-American who developed a philosophical system known as objectivism; something she characterizes as “a philosophy for living on earth”. More to the point, objectivism is that the proper moral purpose of a person’s life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness. “Atlas Shrugged” is filled with objectivism as Dagny Taggart, Hank Reardon and John Gault find their way around a socialist society which no longer appreciates the things or the ideas that they have created.

All throughout “Atlas Shrugged” the main point of objectivism, which most conservatives believe in, is individual rights and capitalism at its crux. The novel, as I’m sure the movie would, stimulates the basic debate about whether capitalism is good or bad, for the greedy or those who believe simply in individual freedom and rights. It stirs the debate about whether the government is better able to run our lives or you the individual are more prepared to do that yourself.

Whether you’re a fan of “Atlas Shrugged” or you think that it has been used as a brainwashing tool for capitalist propaganda, you would likely agree that a movie about the subject is much needed in today’s world. I personally am reading the novel again, it’s pretty shocking just how much of the book is relevant to today’s news. I think “Atlas Shrugged” the movie would be too.

Oh, and just for the record, my money’s on Charlize Theron.
