Will French President Nicolas Sarkozy walk out on the G20 Summit in London this week? That’s a real possibility. He has made it clear that he will not bow down to the dictates of the new American President, Barack Obama and that the U.S. President is pushing an agenda that will bankrupt the United States and Europe. Read about it below and see photos and a video.
Even as world leaders are making their way to London, England in preparation for the G20 Summit, Nicolas Sarkozy has thrown down a gauntlet at the feet of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.S. President Barack Obama. He has said he will not accept the conference if it is all about speeches and words with no commitments. This doesn’t bode well for the outcome of the conference since empty rhetoric is Obama’s stock in trade.
Sarkozy told his ministers that he will ‘leave Mr. Brown’s conference’ if things do not work out. When asked if he would actually walk out, Sarkozy’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Economic Affairs, Xavier Musca, stated: “A basic rule with nuclear deterrence is that you do not say at what point you will use the weapon.” It sounds like the nuclear option is still on the table, so to speak. Should he do it, it will certainly spoil the conference.
The G20 is a summit of the twenty most powerful economies in the world. Its of interest that Obama has chosen to have behind closed door meetings with certain world leaders. British newspapers report that the world leaders with whom he is meeting in private are looking for an opportunity to increase their prestige at home by being photographed with him and Obama is looking for photo ops with world leaders like Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. Apparently, the plan is for him to appear Presidential to help boost his falling approval numbers back in the States.
In addition to threatening to walk out on the G20 Summit, Sarkozy has publicly blamed ‘Anglo-Saxons’ for the world wide economic crisis. The French refer to all white English speaking Europeans as ‘Anglo-Saxons’. Barack Obama would be the number one Anglo Saxon in the eyes of the French. Then, of course, would be Gordon Brown. It is Brown and Obama who are doing a hard push for a global economic regulators.
A deal to tighten regulation will be one of the key features of the G20 accord but France wants a global financial regulator, an idea fiercely opposed by the United States and Britain. Mr Brown has described the notion as ridiculous.
Germany and other nations are reported to be against a global regulator and sources said that President Sarkozy must know that the proposal would not make progress.
Instead, countries will agree that their national regulators should cooperate more. So-called colleges of supervisors are likely to be established to monitor the activities of companies that operate in several countries.
Some think that Sarkozy is spoiling for a fight following the Obama snub he suffered last week. Obama sent a letter to Sarkozy’s predecessor, former French President Jacques Chirac, rather than to Sarkozy. The letter stated that he was looking forward to working with him over the next four years. The letter to Chirac has been widely used throughout the French press and by French comedians as material to humiliate President Sarkozy.
The letter, which referred to Mr Chirac’s present work for the environment, was gold dust for comedians such as Nicolas Canteloup, a morning radio impersonator. He imitated Mr Sarkozy telephoning Mr Obama: “Allo Barack, this is Nicolas . . . you know, Little Big Man … You know, the husband of Carla Bruni, you know, the bombshell.”
As we reported before, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has led the way in opposing Obama’s global new deal. She has gone as far as warning that the current world atmosphere is similar to those used in Germany prior to World War II. Her warnings have fallen on deaf ears in the United States. But they have resonated with European leaders who know all too well the dangers of a failed economy followed by a charismatic leader who systematical imposes more government on the people and takes away individual rights.
Obama may not think he needs France and Germany to get his global new world order pushed through with the majority of world leaders. He has certainly not made any attempts to endear himself to any of the European leaders. Who can forget the gift box set of DVDs he gave Prime Minister Gordon Brown on his visit to Washington? Obama is going out of his way to meet with the communist leaders around the world. Maybe he sees Europe as irrelevant. Maybe they don’t serve his agenda. There are rumors that he has plans to put U.N. control over more American interests (behind closed doors and out of the sight of the media, of course).
This is Obama’s first overseas visit since he was elected President of the United States. So far it looks like it could very well be a gigantic mess. Someone would have to have real leadership skills to manage this situation. Being able to read a speech well is not going to win over this group of world leaders. At least I hope not.

Sarkoszy is right. All points of view must be taken into account. Anglo-Saxon economic policies which brought about mayhem in the world market brought by, as stated, by Brazil’s President, “white with blue eyes.” These policies should not be allowed to continued with impunity. Please, no more self regulation or light touch regulations. There should be more robust approach without stifling the economic growth.
In UK where,I reside, myself and fellow brethern are angry. When they see failed bank executives walk away with millions of pounds for their failure. No amount of stimulus to economy will work till it is cleansed and fumigated.
Sarkoszy, please note, Gordon Brown is Celt and we all know President Obama had African father.

I hope he keeps his word and walks out…not that it will accomplish anything, but I would respect him for it.

Shroff - I think it was pretty clear that Sarkozy was referring to ‘Anglo-Saxons’ as English speaking Europeans … the traditional/historical nemeses of France. Gordon Brown might technically be Celt, but he fits that category. Obama may have an African father, but he’s allegedly American and was raised by an uber-liberal Anglo-Saxon family. Technically, he’s the chief Anglo-Saxon in the way that Sarkozy meant it.
You and your brethren might do well to lay off the separatist talk and assigning blame and start thinking in terms of being part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

@Shroff: No, Sarkoszy is wrong. Treaties and agreements and oversight are not the remedies to a global recession. Free trade and enterprise are the remedies. Everyone wants to be assured that they will be taken care of, that other people will act in a way that preserves their own personal goals. That is a selfish, deluded way of thinking. A true, effective market is highly Darwinistic; those who deserve to fail will fail. Trying to alter that course with legislation is a disastrous strategy.
@Beth: Since I know you loved my “sleight of hand” comment so much, here’s another one. The phrase is actually “stock in trade”, not “stock and trade”.
Let the Rhayader-hating commence.

Obama thinks he is going to walk in there and take charge of the world economy. I thought that was one of the things that the world hated about America.
I would like to see a bunch of them walk out.
Again I say Obama is clueless on what he is doing. I am sure he will insult them because he is all ego.

I am sure he will insult them because he is all ego.
Well, if you want to get existential about it, we all are all ego. Prisoners of our own perceptions.

Clearly were headed the wrong way when big spending socialists (Merkle, Sarkozy, China) say that were being too socialist and spending too much.
If thats not a wake up call to Obama then I’m afriad nothing will work.
These people know first hand just how far you can push these kinds of policies.
Shroff.
White with blue eyes huh ?
That kinda crap puts you on the sidelines buddy.

A wake up call for Obama will come in 2010 when he loses control of the Congress. We are dealing with a community organizer and as you know they deal with billion dollar budgets and are experts at spending other peoples money. These other world leaders, are just rookies.
Barry in Charge will show them the light.

Rhayader - You caught another one! Yeah. You are winning this game. What are you doing at 3 am? I’ll be writing more and will surely have another grammatical error that you can find
