Margarita Zavala Calderon is the wife of Mexico’s President, Felipe Calderon and the First Lady of Mexico. She’s the only first lady of Mexico to have served in Congress, and is very involved in her husband’s presidency. Read her biography below, see photos and a video.

This past week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Mexican President Felipe Calderon to show support for his war against the drug cartels. This week, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder are due to attend an arms trafficking conference in Mexico. And in a couple of weeks, The One himself will meet with President Calderon to discuss how the United States can help defeat the cartels.
The excalating ‘War on Drugs’ between Mexican military and the cartels has reduced drug supply into the US but increased dramatically the horrible violence in Mexico.
By all accounts Felipe Calderon has been fearless in dealing with the drug cartels, even at great risk to his own family. But he says he and his wife Margarita are committed to this cause. He has made it his top priority during his 6-year term in office.
Margarita Esther Zavala Gómez del Campo was born on July 25, 1967 in Mexico City, Mexico so her age is 41. She is the wife of Mexican President Felipe Calderon and the First Lady of Mexico. She will serve in that position from 2006-2012.
Margarita Zavala grew up in Mexico City. She was the fifth child of seven siblings. Her parents, Rafael and Monica were lawyers. Margarita Zavala attended the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City. She and Felipe Calderone married in 1993 and have three children: Maria, Luis Felipe and Juan Pablo.
Margarita Zavala was a member of the Mexican Legislature serving from 2003-2006. She is an attorney and currently serves as the president of an advisory board for DIF (el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia or the Integral Development of the Family). DIF is a government agency that helps to develop and strengthen families in Mexico.
