Kathleen Gregg’s husband, Senator Judd Gregg, was nominated this week to to the position of U.S. Secretary of Commerce in President Obama’s Cabinet. Senator Gregg is a Republican. His replacement to the Senate was made by New Hampshire’s Democrat Governor. At Senator Gregg’s insistence, a Republican was named, maintaining the balance of Republicans in the Senate.

Kathleen MacLellan married Judd Gregg in 1973. She is 58 years old. They have three children: two daughters, Molly, and Sarah and a son, Joshua.
Kathleen has been the First Lady of New Hampshire twice, when her husband served as a two-term New Hampshire Governor. She is a seasoned politician’s wife. Judd Gregg served four terms as a U.S. Representative from New Hampshire and is now in his third term as a Senator. Her deceased father-in-law, Hugh Gregg, was also a New Hampshire governor.
In July 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Kathleen Gregg to the Board of Directors of the Student Loan Marketing Association (SLMA), a subsidiary of Sallie Mae. The board has seven presidential appointees. Mrs. Gregg replaced an outgoing board member previously appointed by President Bill Clinton. As a SLMA board member, Gregg received approximately $15,000 per year plus $2,000 for each board meeting she attended. Mrs. Gregg has also served on the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Task Force on Child Neglect and Abuse.
Current New Hampshire Governor, John Lynch, appointed Republican J. Bonnie Newman to replace Senator Gregg in the U.S. Senate after his confirmation as Secretary of Commerce. Newman and Kathleen Gregg once sat on the board of the Student Loan Marketing Association together and Newman served as Judd Gregg’s Chief of Staff in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Both Kathleen and Judd Gregg have been recognized for their work to protect the environment. The couple worked together as preservation advocates for the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, and Senator Gregg has received numerous honors for his nature conservancy.
According to Columbia College Today, Senator Gregg’s alma mater, Kathleen Gregg and Laura Bush are close friends. The Gregg’s are described as “regular” people and this college newsletter says the Senator “dotes” on his wife and children.
One of the favorite stories that friends like to tell is one about Senator Gregg and a stop at a Citgo for gasoline. The multi-millionaire purchased a powerball lottery ticket and won over $800,000.00.
In 2003, Kathleen returned to her McLean, Virginia home where she was accosted at knife-point. According to Mrs. Gregg, the two men tied her up and made her lie face down on the floor. They rifled through jewelry and took anything they thought they could sell, including her engagement ring, $50 in case from her wallet and a set of golf clubs. She overheard the men saying that if they went “down,” they were going down together and she was going with them. She knew she had to get out the house. She told them she could get money for them if they would take her to her bank. She convinced them to untie her, but one of the men held a knife at her throat the entire ride. She vowed that she would not get back in the car with the men. In the bank, one man held the knife against her side. When the teller handed over the cash, she broke away, ran along a hallway and hid in a closet. The men were captured two days later. In 2005, one was sentenced to twenty years in prison and the other to fifteen years.
The Gregg’s permanent home is in Rye, New Hampshire.
