Obama Angry?

Barack Obama apparently decided to drop in on the White House press corps yesterday to make nice following a couple of days of gaffs and confusion with the main stream media. You know, there was the forgetting to let anyone know he was taking a second Oath of Office and just releasing a White House photo of the event. Then there was the confusion at the first executive orders signing ceremony. Then there was the whole Vice President Joe Biden being all confused and making fun of Chief Justice Roberts in front of the press and Obama not being very happy about that. Then there was the first press conference held by Obama’s Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, which was a little uncomfortable and awkward. Gibbs seemed to want to talk about the President’s blackberry and how the Obama girls were spending their time in the White House. You know, feel good stories. The press wanted to talk about Gitmo, executive orders, whether Obama had let the Generals talk during their meeting about Iraq and where were those terrorists going to live when Gitmo is shut down. It didn’t go well. That’s a lot for just being in office about three days.

After all that, Obama must have thought he should go down to the press corp and walk in their midst for a few minutes to make everything all right again. What was he thinking? They are called the White House press corps because they are part of the press who focus on the White House. I have to ask again, What was he thinking? He’s not a candidate anymore. He’s the President. People expect him to actually answer questions and know things. Charm and charisma will only go so far.

Well, in the midst of this about ten minute impromptu visit, the press started asking questions again. Who would’a thought reporters would do that!!! Obama apparently thought they could chat about working out, fist bumps and who was assigned to what desk. The reporters, on the other hand, wanted to ask him questions about inconsistencies between what he’s saying and what he’s doing.

This discrepancy between the expectations for this encounter created a little confrontation.

Asked how he could reconcile a strict ban on lobbyists in his administration with a Deputy Defense Secretary nominee who lobbied for Raytheon, Obama interrupted with a knowing smile on his face.

“Ahh, see,” he said, “I came down here to visit. See this is what happens. I can’t end up visiting with you guys and shaking hands if I’m going to get grilled every time I come down here.”

Pressed further by the Politico reporter about his Pentagon nominee, William J. Lynn III, Obama turned more serious, putting his hand on the reporter’s shoulder and staring him in the eye.

“Alright, come on” he said, with obvious irritation in his voice. “We will be having a press conference at which time you can feel free to [ask] questions. Right now, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself to you guys – that’s all I was trying to do.”

The president was quickly saved by a cameraman in the room who called out: “I’d like to say it one more time: ‘Mr. President.’ ?

Is there trouble in paradise?
