Xin Yang, a 22-year-old female graduate student at Virginia Tech University, was murdered yesterday on campus. Haiyang Zhu, a 25-year-old male graduate student at Virginia Tech, is currently in custody for the murder.

A 22-year-old female graduate student named Xin Yang was murdered yesterday at approximately 7 p.m. at the Au Bon Pain restaurant in the graduate student center. Haiyang Zhu reportedly attacked her with a knife and decapitated her.

Campus spokespeople stated that the murder was the first on campus since Cho Seung Hui murdered 32 students in the worst mass shooting in American history. Allegedly, Xin Yang was an acquaintance of Haiyang Zhu, though details of their relationship are not currently known. Yang had been at the university for only two weeks, and was beginning a program in accounting. Zhu had been a student since the fall of 2008, and was studying for a doctorate in agriculture and applied economics.

Both Xin Yang and Haiyang Zhu are natives of China and were at Virginia Tech as foreign students. Xin Yang is a native of Beijing, China. Haiyang Zhu is from Ningbo, China

Virginia Tech campus police arrested Haiyang Zhu at the scene. He is being charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail. Reportedly, there was blood on him when he was arrested.

Campus murders are almost becoming common these days. Murders at Duke, Auburn, University of North Carolina, University of Chicago and Dartmouth (just to name a few) have all made national news in the past few years. Schools have developed alert systems and have tightened security, but there is little an administration can do to prevent a crime like this one, a deranged man killing someone he knows.

Additional information about the scene of the crime is available at Huffington Post.
