Celebrities debuted America’s Song on a special edition of the Oprah Winfrey Show that aired today. Its a good song. Read about it, the lyrics and hear the video below.
The elongated celebration of the coronation inauguration of Barack Obama continues. The last few days have been spent infusing the greatness of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy with the image of Obama. Today has been spent superimposing Obama’s image onto the greatness of the legacy left to us by Martin Luther King, Jr.
We do live in interesting times.
The Oprah Winfrey Show did a combination celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday and Barack Obama’s coronation yesterday. The show was both inspirational and … in some ways … incredibly sad. You’d have to be made of stone not to be inspired by the inspirational courage and speech of MLK, Jr. That was the inspirational part of the show.
The sad part of the show was when the seemingly endless parade of Hollywood stars started talking. They are proud of their country now. Weren’t they before? Obama has made them feel a connection to America. Didn’t they before? Obama has made them think about service to the nation! They never thought of helping other people before Obama? He has inspired them. He’s given them hope. He’s brought about a new era for America. He’s made them proud. He’s …. he’s everything to them.
And that is sad because he’s just a man. They are worshiping a man rather than honoring the office he holds and the country he is supposed to be serving.
They have written a new patriotic song and unveiled it on Oprah today. Its titled America’s Song. A potpourri of stars participated in the song that was written by will.i.am and David Foster. It was performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. yesterday. Bono, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Seal and Faith Hill performed the song.
Justin Timberlake, Usher, Scarlett Johansson, Forrest Whitaker, Glen Close, Angela Bassett, Bebe Winans, WMG head Lyor Cohen and WMG executive Kevin Liles were also in attendance for the taping.
“We all of a sudden have swagger. America, we’re cool now,” Timberlake said of his feelings about the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Usher was interviewed while coordinating volunteers for an organization called Service Nation. The group was renovating a Washington, D.C., school. “We call this group ‘Generation S’ or service-minded youth leaders, because we have to be the change,” said Usher of his fellow volunteers.
I think its a very good song. I just wonder why these people are just now proud of their country. I also wonder what happens to them when the party is over and Barack Obama has to start acting like a President? What happens when he makes a decision they don’t like? What happens when their souls aren’t suddenly fulfilled and their hearts filled with joy every day? What happens when the celebrations die down and we get back to living our lives? What then?
What happens when we start realizing that we are moving towards socialism and can’t even put our fingers on when it happened?
I’ve included the video and lyrics below. Enjoy the song and pray for America … and pray for our President Barack Obama … we all need those prayers.

I guess this is just one more change to get ready for - a new song for America - how long will it be before we longer hear our National Anthem. Remember when a performer in Florida (I think) sang the Black National Anthem instead of the National Anthem?
I agree with you, this is a beautiful song.
Very thoughtful commentary, Beth.

I was trying to be nice Cathryn! lol I wondered if her hand was over her heart or if she was adjusting her coat.
You KNOW they had to get a photo of the two of them pledging allegiance with their hands over their hearts! They’ll use that to counter all the photos of them ignoring the Pledge of Allegiance.
Maggie - I hope you are wrong - but that went through my mind too. Its great to have another patriotic song - but I hope they don’t plan on getting rid of any that don’t have to do with the Obamessiah rather than patriotism for our country.
