Despite efforts to sanitize the presidential inauguration, the Obama team is now confronted with a brewing controversy about ‘trail maids’ from Alabama. See their photos and video, and give us your opinion.

The Azalea Trail Maids are a group of Alabama high school seniors in traditional costume, students in Mobile Alabama who Obama has approved to dance during the inaugural parade. That seems harmless enough until the NAACP got involved. The local chapter is pressuring Obama to pull the rug from under the gals because they say 19th century southern dresses are racist.

“These are not just regular costumes. These are the costumes that remind someone of the plantation in ‘Gone with the Wind,’ said the head of Alabama’s NAACP.

The housewives have their defenders, however, are pretty much everyone else including local country officials in Alabama.

“I don’t see what the dresses have to do with racism. I don’t see it. It’s just a regular dress to me. Just a dress they wore back in the day,” said a citizen named Carolyn Tius who is remarkable in her ability to state the obvious.

So far the Trail Maid attackers have no success. They are still prominently featured on the official inaugural blog. (yes it exists). And the girls are still looking for donations to send them to Washington on their homepage so that they too can join the inaugural parade.

So what are your thoughts, dear reader? Will Obama give in to pressure from an overly-sensitive group of politically-correct elitists? Or are they just dresses?
