By all accounts, Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 is a hero. He successfully crash landed his jetliner, without any major injuries or fatalities, in the Hudson River. He is the kind of pilot we all want! Read his biography below, see a photo, and watch a video.
As we have reported here at Right Pundits, Captain Sullenberger was virtually out of any other options at 3,000 feet when he intentionally and calmly steered his crippled US Airways jetliner, fully loaded with passengers, toward the Hudson River.
A former Air Force fighter pilot with 40 years of flying experience — including gliders — Captain Sullenberger’s Airbus A320 apparently struck a flock of birds moments after takeoff from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, knocking out both his engines.
His particular jet, which is 10 years old, is designed to fly with one engine out. But a bird strike that kills both powerplants, if confirmed by federal transportation investigators, is virtually unheard of in U.S. aviation. His skill and bravery which led to the safety of everyone on board, is the stuff that legends - and certainly Hollywood movies - are made of!
Chesley B. Sullenberger III, age 57, is from Danville, California. His friends - and now the world - call him Sully.
Sully is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and he holds an M.P.A., Public Administration, from University of Northern Colorado and an M.S in Psychology from Purdue.
Sully has over 40 years of flying experience, working for US Airways since 1980. Before that, he spent more than six years as a U.S. Air Force F-4 fighter pilot. While in the Air Force, he was a member of a USAF aircraft accident investigation board; served as a flight training officer; and unit deployment and war plans officer.
Besides being a pilot, Captain Sullenberger is also the founder of Safety Reliability Methods. His firm describes itself as providing ‘technical expertise and strategic vision and direction to improve safety and reliability in a variety of high risk industries.’ Well gosh! After all of this, his firm’s business should soon be booming!
And Sully is married girls!

Last I heard he could walk on water.
All I know is that he’d better start learning how to hold his breath.
Well done Sully.
From the looks of things you were clearly ontop of it.

This would have been tragic had we not had a military trained pilot. This guy is a true hero and should be hailed as such. His crew also are heroes for the job they did getting people off the plane.
