Barack Obama said in an interview today that choosing the right dog for his daughters is harder than selecting a Cabinet member. Yes. He really said that. So, you can read more about that difficult decision below, see photos and watch a video.

Presidential Pooch Choices

We all knew Obama promised his girls that when they moved into the White House, they would get a dog. And though it may be a hard decision for The One to make, it does seem he is leaning toward two breeds: a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound. I could make an ‘arugula‘ joke here but I won’t. Anyhoo, so the family, who has never had a dog before, is going to local Washington area shelters to see if these preferred pets might be available to them for rescue.

Both breeds were chosen to reduce daughter Malia’s allergy to dogs and they have big Democratic fans to boot. Senator Ted Kennedy owns two Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Splash, which are always with him as he walks the halls of the Capitol. Vice President-elect Joe Biden has a Labradoodle, which is part Labrador retriever and part poodle, named Brother.

I really don’t care which of the pooches the Obamas choose, I am partial to golden retrievers myself. My hope is that The One’s decision-making abilities – on Iran, the economy, taxes – are abit more perfected before taking the oath of office. And as far as presidential pooches go? I still like Barney Bush.
