The Russians seem to frequently take advantage of the world’s attention being focused elsewhere to further their own agendas. In this case, while we are all watching the Middle East, they have cut off gas to the Ukraine and thereby have drastically reduced gas supplies to Western Europe. Read about it below, see a map and video.

The world is watching the Gaza – Israel War. The American people are preparing to watch the coronation inauguration of the King almost President Obama. The Obama administration is still raising money. And the Russians are taking another stab at hijacking the flow of gas and oil into Western Europe.

I have to say it. I have to say, ‘I told you so’, because I did. I said it when I wrote about Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. I said it when Russia invaded Georgia and tried to get control of their oil pipelines. I keep saying it because its brutally obvious what’s going on to anyone who is paying attention and understands that all countries generally have their own best interest at heart. That’s as opposed to people who only pay attention to what they imagine what the United States is doing wrong and believe that the United States is the only evil empire ever in the history of mankind, rather than a relatively benign and generous superpower.

All of that being as it may be. Blame us, blame Georgia when Russia invaders her, blame Israel when she defends herself against terrorists and keep watching us as our enemies use a back door to gain power and influence.

If Russia gets control of the oil and gas pipelines through Georgia, the Ukraine and Poland, then Western Europe will have to pay any price Russia demands for gas and oil. Do you think for a minute that this isn’t a scenario that Putin and Medvedev wouldn’t be licking their greedy little lips over? Of course they are.

The leaders of Europe obviously understood this problem when Russia tried to crush Georgia. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were burning up the roads between their own countries and Moscow. The U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrung his hands. Then President George W. Bush sent three war ships to the Black Sea and Russia backed off. Now Russia is taking the Ukrainian path. The E.U. is demanding they resolve the issue, but they are basically toothless.

The question will be if the Obama administration will have the guts of the Bush administration and send a strong and subtle message that the Russians will understand. Bush didn’t talk about it, he just acted. I hope that Obama will act and not just talk about it.
