An American organization called the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to STOP WAR and End Racism) is calling for a nation-wide Day of Action today to protest Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip.

Calling the bombing of Gaza “a massacre of Palestinians,” the ANSWER Coalition is joining with the Muslim American Society Freedom, Free Palestine Alliance, National Council of Arab Americans, Al-Awda, and International Palestine Right to Return Coalition to call for an end to the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. On December 30, 2008, there will be demonstrations in cities across the country, including Washington D.C., where there will be a rally in front of the State Department. There will also be demonstrations outside of Israeli embassy buildings and consulates in many cities.

The ANSWER Coalition was founded in 2001 in the wake of the September 11 attacks against America. Since their founding, they have protested numerous issues, including Palestinian rights and the U.S. actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. ANSWER also organized protests against Bush administration policies in Latin America and Korea. Their largest action to date occurred on April 20, 2002, when, according to the ANSWER website, 100,000 people marched in Washington calling for Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories.

On their website, the ANSWER Coalition describes itself as “an anti-racist, peace and social justice movement.” There are numerous international peace and anti-racist organizations in its “steering committee.” There is also an organization called the “Party for Socialism and Liberation” in its steering committee, which may give one a clue as to the roots of ANSWER’s political philosophy.

We will see if this “Day of Action” actually results in any change in Israeli policy.
