These days it’s really become quite traditional to speak of the ‘wonder’ or the ‘magic’ of Christmas, as though the holiday were simply a time to have fun through the eyes of children; enjoying old and treasured relationships through gift giving and other celebrations. However Christians, like me, believe that Christmas Eve is so much more! Read more below and see a video.

We all love the bright and beautiful decorations (I have a tree in almost every room!), great foods and spirits, and oh those gifts – make mine jewelry! But for the Christian, this time of the year really means much more – something precious and holy – and the secularization can be a wee bit overdone! At times, some may be tempted, like Charlie Brown in the old ‘Peanuts’ special, to shout,

“Isn’t there anybody who knows what Christmas is all about?”

Christians believe that Christmas is contained in that lovely Hebrew name Emmanuel or ‘God with us.’ Christmas to Christians is Jesus, the Son of God, leaving His Glory in Heaven; lowly and meek, to become one of us. The spiritual connection and secularization of the holiday can co-exist — even co-mingle. People of faith can and do celebrate mightily this time of year, for most certainly, we have the real promise of hope in the future.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

Emmanuel – God with us all. Merry Christmas!
