Majel Barrett-Roddenberry was the wife of the late Gene Roddenberry, who created the hit television show, Star Trek. The show was ahead of its time, not just figuratively. The original show in the mid 60s featured an oriental, a Russian, and a communications officer who was both black and a women, all as leading officers on the ship. For the time, this was quite a concept, as most any U.S. naval ship would have had all white male officers on the bridge.
Gene’s revolutionary ideas sparked a wave of enthusiastic followers and perhaps political ideas in that generation as well as the next. The Next Generation series was also a hit during the nineties. Gene passed away in 1991, and since then, Majel has been considered the first-lady of Star Trek. She helped complete projects for additional series that Gene was working on. She also played the role of Laxanna Troy and was the voice of the Enterprise’s computer on the Next Generation.

She played various roles in New York and in Hollywood until she landed a spot in the original Star Trek series. She played the role of Nurse Christine Chapel. On August 6, 1969, Majel married Gene Roddenberry, after the show had cancelled.
