Democratic Representative Hilda Solis of California is Barack Obama’s pick for Labor Secretary, one of the last positions to be filled in his Cabinet. Read her biography below, see photos and watch a video.

Representative Hilda Solis of the Los Angeles-area has been tapped as The One’s choice for Labor Department Secretary and Labor likes her a lot. I suppose that would be no surprise since a pick this important would have been pre-approved by organized labor beforehand. Here’s a statement from AFL-CIO president John Sweeney:

‘We’re thrilled at the prospect of having Rep. Hilda Solis as our nation’s next labor secretary. We’re confident that she will return to the labor department one of its core missions – – to defend workers’ basic rights in our nation’s workplaces. She’s proven to be a passionate leader and advocate for all working families – – in fact, she’s voted with working men and women 97 percent of the time. The AFL-CIO looks forward to working with Rep. Solis as she charts new territory for our nation’s working men and women.’

Obama’s transition team will likely make the announcement of Congresswoman Solis on Friday. Also expected to be announced is Ron Kirk as U.S. Trade Representative and Karen Gordon Mills to lead the Small Business Administration.

Hilda Solis Biography

Hilda L. Solis was born on October 20, 1957 in Los Angeles, California so her age is 51. She has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 2001, representing the 32nd District of California.

She was educated at Cal Poly Pomona and earned a master’s degree at University of Southern California.

She served in the Carter White House in the Office of Hispanic Affairs and later became an analyst with the Office of Management and Budget. She was elected as a member of the California State Assembly in 1992 and after one term, was elected to the California State Senate before entering the House. She was elected to the house in 2000 and is now serving her fourth term in Congress.

Hilda Solis says her priorities in Congress include expanding access to affordable health care, protecting the environment, and improving the lives of working families.

Controversially, Hilda Solis has referred to President George W. Bush as simply “Bush”, saying “It is time for Bush to face reality.” She was reprimanded by California Representative Duncan Hunter, who told her that “it is appropriate when referring to the President of the United States be he Democrat or Republican to refer to him as the President.”

Hilda Solis is married to Sam Sayyad and lives in El Monte, California.
