An F 18 crashed in San Diego, California this afternoon. Read about it and see videos and photo below.
A F/A-18D Hornet jet crashed just before noon today into a residential neighborhood in San Diego California. The pilot was preparing to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and crashed about two miles from the Miramar Air Base. Indications are that the pilot attempted to get the plane to a safe area because he didn’t eject until the last moment.
He landed in a tree, but the plane crashed into a densely populated residential area just off Interstate 805. The supersonic jet slammed into houses. Its believed that it completely destroyed two houses. Initial reports were that no one was killed or even injured in the event. However, in the last few minutes San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has reported that two people were killed on the ground.
Residents in the area report that the ground shook more violently than any earthquake they had ever experienced. There is debris spread everywhere including the cockpit of the plane on top of a house and brush fires around the neighborhood.
Here is a map of the location of the crash and more photos from the crash site.
