Some good news from California – Proposition 8 – the Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage – passes, according to AP. Here are the current numbers from the California Secretary of State website with 96.6% of the vote in:
08 – Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry
YES: 5,235,486 52.2%
NO: 4,800,656 47.8%
This is the mother of all upsets and reaffirms the 2000 vote against gay marriage before the men and women in black robes threw out that vote from the people.
One side note – over 70% of African Americans supported the ban on Gay Marriage. Hispanics also showed great support for Proposition 8.
Thoughts?

conservatives must look to racially diversify the base

Yes on Prop8 was good, although it’s sad that the baby genocide was not opposed (Prop4). The next civil rights movement truly belongs to the unborn children, they are the ones that right now have absolutely no protected rights, including the right to live.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Rivera, you talk about civil rights. How is banning equal rights to men and women “good”? Apparently you support the oppression of peoples’ personal lives. Oh wait, I forgot. I man marrying a man hurts your life.

It’s a long-term losing battle, and both a short-term strategic mistake for the GOP and a moral error in judgment. The US Supreme Court will settle this question a different way within 10 years, and the victors write the history.

Interesting that the black community, which the homosexual community strives so hard to be identified with, effectively sealed the deal by sheer numbers thereby protecting marriage.
Joe: marriage is not a right, it is a privilege. The California Supreme Court tried to create a new “fundamental right” out of thin air, and the majority of Californians disagreed with them yesterday. Apparently, Floridians and Arizonans feel the same way as they voted in a similar fashion.
Children brought up by 2 biological parents is ideal for their development. Anything less than that results in dysfunction, which does “hurt” society in the long run.
It’s not personal, it’s biology.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
McCain: I would be interested to hear how protecting traditional marriage is “immoral”. Try not to use the word “fair”, as that isn’t the same thing.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
African Americans and Latinos were well-organized and showed up in huge numbers in California to vote for Obama, and YES on 8.
The religious groups in those communities are what turned the tide.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Bullfrog.. so what is better 50-60% children living in broken heterosexual homes or a few thousand that live in homosexual homes?
“It’s not personal, it’s biology.”
Funny how social conservatives use science to explain their points on some issues but completely ignore it on others..
What percentage children are actually being raised by their “biological parents” ?? 25%
November 5th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
apparently we no longer hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal…
November 5th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
KV: The comparison between a broken heterosexual home and a homosexual home is apples to apples. Neither are ideal, and yield less than ideal results in terms of healthy, contributing citizens in society. It is fundamentally egotistical for a person (or persons) to intentionally bring a child into either environment because said people are putting their selfish desire for children above the basic needs of the child. Bad start for someone calling themselves a “parent”.
Not positive what you mean by other arguments where social conservatives ignore science, but I am pretty sure it goes beyond the subject of this discussion. I would happily chat with you about it if you wish, see my home page link…

“Interesting that the black community, which the homosexual community strives so hard to be identified with…”
Source? The black community uses gay slurs more than anybody – listen to any rap song. Watch some Spanish language TV while you’re at it – gay characters are portrayed as horrible stereotypes and abused by everyone.
The last time there was any overlap between the blacks and gays was disco and disco is long dead.

“The comparison between a broken heterosexual home and a homosexual home is apples to apples.”
Then why isn’t anybody arguing for a constitutional ban on divorce?
November 5th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Oreginian: I should have been more specific by saying that part of the homosexual agenda is to achieve minority status similar to blacks and have their struggle for certain “rights” equated with the black civil rights movement. In light of that, it seems ironic that the black community sees the gay marriage issue as a moral one and not one of civil rights.
November 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Oregonian: Obviously divorce isn’t good for society. Maybe you can start a movement to ban it?

Difficult for the Feds to throw this one out due to the defense of marriage act – me thinks.
Of course the men and women in black (justices) – likely have a different opinion.
I worry that a state judge will throw the prop out on a technicality.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Tina, a Cal state court judge will not be able to throw this out (I don’t believe anyway) because it’s more than just another law, it’s a constitutional amendment. The judges can’t negate the state constitution.
The only way I know of reversing a measure that’s in a state constitution is to take it to federal court. I think this will probably go to federal court, and I have no idea what will happen there.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
IR – I heard that the activists were looking to throw it out on technical grounds this AM. I agree its likely a long shot, but I did not believe that the CA justices would overthrow the will of the people in 2000.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Updated results with 99.5% in:
08 – Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry
YES: 5,359,110 52.5%
NO: 4,867,034 47.5%
Difference is 492,076. It has been increasing steadily since this am. Probably scattered absentee.
Hey my vote probably counted this go around. Its not floating in the SF Bay.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
WTF? Gay marriage is the least of our worries right now. Our economy is going down the toilet and we’re worried about Adam and Steve tying the knot? People are people. I don’t agree with the homosexual lifestyle but if they’re not forcing their beliefs on me I don’t care what they put up their asses behind closed doors. If a black man has the right to run for president then gays should have the right to be married. I find it apalling that it actually made it to a ballot measure! Who gives a f@#k!
November 5th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Here is a good article on the pending lawsuits, IR from the SF Chronicle:.

Thanks for the link, Tina. That’s an awfully creative argument that the lawyers are putting forth.
It just might work though. I’m giving up trying to predict California politics. It’s just too wacky.
November 5th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Yes, we Californians are wacky. I would not put it past the CA Supreme Court to meddle sgain.
November 5th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Bullfrog, thanks for your comments and challenge. I actually said this is a “moral error in judgment” rather than the paraphrase you made.
It is an error because our government confers wasteful, unearned perks on individuals who choose to marry which the rest of the married, single, and homosexual folks have to pay for. Like social security survivor benefits for spouses. It’s the same argument about why the last generation’s opposition to interracial marriage was also a moral error in judgment, and why conservatives should oppose racial preferences. Equal opportunity under the law among all citizens is a moral issue.
November 5th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
It should be noted that Jerry Brown changed the language on the proposition.
And then you have SF MAyor Gavin Newsome bragging about what the CASupreme Court did in May.Supporters effectively cut an ad using Newsome’s words (folks check out that ad if you have time).
Both of these guys wanted to run for CA Governor in 2010. However, both are probably finished.
