Showing just how nasty the presidential race became in the final days, Barack Obama has perhaps taken things to a new low by apparently flipping off John McCain with the international sign of change, or at least it was taken this way by McCain supporters. The apparent show of disrespect came during a speech in which he looked tired at the end of the campaign on November 3rd, 2008. Was it inadvertent?
Partisans will argue that “the bird” sign was inadvertent, or perhaps intended as a joke. The timing of it during the speech left little doubt to his backers. Just as he uttered John McCain’s name, then it happened. A presidential candidate flipping off another, as the story goes, and then it was over.
Hillary Clinton supporters will remember that Obama was accused of the same thing during the primary season when he said her name in a random display of praise that was considered phony by her supporters. They were outraged by “the bird” at the time.
Curious about reader reactions to this video. There was a time in our political discourse where certain things were off limits. Do you feel the behavior is acceptable in our era? Could it have been inadvertent twice? A Freudian slip? Or nothing at all?
Both videos are below.

Tomorrow the American people will be flipping off the entire Republican Party.
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:28 am
Seriously? No, really? Is that your best shot you losers!

It may be difficult but, grow up a little guys…

Please extend the flipping of the bird to your entire editorial staff (or the clowns that put this website out). If you’re going for satire, work a little bit harder cabrones!

…non-issue. Moving right along…
This isn’t even close to something that is offensive or intentional. Give us all a break and write about something worthwhile. If you spent half the time you spend on nonsense to doing something productive, you might make the world a better place. Instead, you only serve to make it more inane.

I’ve watched Obama ever since the Hillary flip-off video came out. That’s just the way he scratches his cheek. He does it often, whatever the subject matter. He needs to break this habit, because especially in freeze frame, it can look like the bird. Nice try, but this doesn’t mean a thing.
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:34 am
oh, you think that was for McCain only?…for the republicans only? Ya’ll are so ignorant - he’ll be doing that to all of us for the next 4 years IF he happens to win
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:36 am
Hahahahah, you guys really have no self respect left, huh? Because McCain has always been the candidate to stick to decency in this race… There is absolutely no question that this was NOT intentional. What do you even postulate his motive is? “Oh, if I flip off the other guy, I’ll get more votes”??? Yeah right

This is just another example of the media blowing things out of proportion and reporting on stupid things rather than substantive issues. Obama clearly did not give McCain the finger. He’s obviously wiping his mouth, and the still photo of that moment is misleading. Its use by the media is reprehensible.

I don’t think so. I found this picture more entertaining:

Remember it was Cheney who actually TOLD a senator to go “F” himself. I imagine you guys were pretty proud of that one…

I am a registered republican and strong McCain Supporter -
This video while entertaining is total nonsense
This election should be about the issues - NOT about whether OBAMA subconsciously flipped off McCain - Which I believe he did not
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 am
Oh Marie… You poor ignorant, manipulated child.
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 am
Oh my God, right before he flips off McCain, you can see him clearly indicating that McCain is “#1″!
Obama’s too indecisive to be president!
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 am
If Mr. Obama did really flip-off John McCain, this is the least of what the most negative man may deserve, after all of the outrageous behavior that has come from JM ofer the years.
What is really required is subpoenas and impeachment to help to heal the American people.

Get a job, you jobless swine
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:41 am
You’re making yourselves look like idiots. How can you expect anyone to take you seriously when you put absurd stuff like this up. I’m sad for you and anyone who believes this.
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 am
Fortunately, the real news media is, for the most part, reporting on issues that matter. This is just stupid.
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:48 am
bo is unfit to be president - this is just one more example of how he deals with opponents.
he acts likes a childish thug from the ‘hood with that kind of behavior.
and Flo Bro? give me a break.
November 3rd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Another idiotic attempt by the dim-witted McCain supporters to try and stir up controversy.
You truly are boneheads.
November 3rd, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Wow, you guys are desparate. Keep looking for ammo, because it ain’t here.
November 3rd, 2008 at 12:08 pm
