Here is the historic video of the Chandrayaan moon launch, India’s introduction to lunar space exploration. The unmanned space craft will orbit the moon. See the video, news and pictures here.
The Chandrayaan 1 spacecraft began a 2-year space mission where is will orbit the moon and transmit imagery and scientific data to earth in a remarkable fashion that has never before been attempted by man. That is only half the story.
The other half of India’s introduction to space exploration is the euphoric sense of pride that the nation feels, and people of India feel at this hour. Searches in the Indian Google index reveal that 16 out of the top 20 internet searches are about the Chandrayaan launch, while it is also a hot topic in far away places such as, well, the United States of America.
The event was broadcast live on national television while commerce in the nation stood still. India held their collective breaths as the rocket soared high into the air, blasting off from a mere mortal pad on the ground. ISRO Chief Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh) and chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation G. Madhavan Nair are now national heroes, akin to Charles Lindberg in U.S. history. They intend to plant the flag of India on the moon within 2 years.
President Pratibha Patil of India congratulated ISRO scientists for the success. ISRO is the equivalent of NASA in the former British Commonwealth. Amazing to me that India has finally thrown off the British yoke and accomplished something that the colonists still have not done.
Bully for India. Let’s toast a successful journey, and enjoy the video of Indian scientists in white shirts sitting in what appears to be a football locker room.
