No, it was not in the air at the time.
Maureen Dowd, maven columnist for the New York Times, has been disinvited from the John McCain Straight Talk American Tour 2008. After an August 30 McCain-Palin rally in Pennsylvania where Mo described Palin as “an under qualified candidate in go-go boots“, she was not permitted back on the McCain plane.
Dowd retorts “I didn’t think John McCain would ever be as dismissive of the First Amendment as Dick Cheney.” Bitter, yes. But as McCain is not yet president of the United States, he and Palin really do not have to put up with Dowd’s abuse. If he becomes president, then he has to live with the likes of Dowd and Helen Thomas and the rest of the mainstream media. For the time being, though, it’s still John McCain’s plane, to share with whomever he so chooses.
However, I do worry that by stifling Dowd, his reputation will only suffer further with the press, and that’s the last he needs to deal with a month from the election.

Did you see the hate mail that the national review columnist got for her article saying that Palin wasn’t qualified?
Conservatives don’t tolerate dissent very well.

The fact that she called him on his noun-verb-POW excuse-making and wrote five columns in a row critical of Palin may have been a factor.
More of that infamous McCain pettiness.

To be fair, she never called Palin “an under qualified (sic) candidate in go-go boots”. That was the headline of her column in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Most, if not all, of the other papers ran the headline “Vice in Go-Go Boots?”
It was a fairly scathing article all the same, and not the kind of thing you want to encourage if you are attempting to protect the VP nominee.

I heard Maureen Dowd is going to make a re-recording of Merle Haggard’s hit song, “Silver Wings Shinning in the Sunlight.” Of course, she landed back in N.Y. much sooner than Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin … it was blogged that she had her broom all tuned up for Halloween which is proof enough that her black hat fits the mind upon which it sits.

Only the mind-numb liberals read her column. I only read it when I can’t fail asleep.
If Gov. Palin had only had one abortion, or her husband had cheated on her over and over again or if she had been fighting for children and women for 36 years she would be qualified to be V.P. and maybe one day president.
What am I talking about? She’s a Republican, she can’t be president ever.

Too bad the plane wasn’t in the air.

Palin is fresh, healthy, attractive, not all frazzled so those are part of good qualifications. She is intelligent and getting a fast education so that works. I have been noticing our regular politicians all look frazzled and tattered and spacy. As long as someone has a good learning curve and is highly motivated with curiosity is that so bad? Also Alaska is in growth mode which means she should be positive compared to someone from a hemmed in state. Dowd is one of the elites of the 5th estate and I don’t think very deep from what I have seen when she round panel’s on tv. My hope is Palin will step beyond her handlers soon and just be herself and step outside the machine and see what good she can do rather than what she can help prop up. Her integrity will be tested and I hope she goes with integrity and does the people’s business.
