Last night’s Saturday Night Live included a skit about Senator John McCain. It seems Al Franken, the former SNL star now running for the Senate in Minnesota, helped write the opening sketch which mocked McCain.
SNL Skit: McCain Video
The skit featured Darrell Hammond as John McCain, reviewing and approving new ads for his presidential campaign.
One of the ads, McCain is told, consists of “fast cuts back and forth between Obama, Pacman Jones, Ludacris, Michael Vick, Marion Barry, Al Sharpton, OJ Simpson, ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick” and a host of others.
“What is that one trying to say?” McCain asks the director.
“Well, you know, it’s not really trying to say anything, we’ll just let people make of it what they will,” the director replies.
So Saturday Night Live paints John McCain as a racist. Which seems to be the smear of the week by Obama and his surrogates. And Al Franken? He still isn’t funny.

It could be saying that McCain is a rac*st
OR
It could be a statement about how politicians say something without saying it directly, believe the public will fill in the blanks with their worst possible interpretation. This way they are not accountable for the message, as they public’s assumed interpretation does all the work for them.
The ad could easily have been Obama showing an ad of elderly people in various conditions with Obama saying the same McCain lines, and the message of the skit would have been the same.
Of coure SNL has a liberal bent, but don’t they parody Obama as well? I don’t watch SNL (I don’t find it funny).

You’re right, Franken still isn’t funny.

I love what Franken did to Ann Coulter. Google it.
Isn’t it great to live in America? Perhaps you would prefer it otherwise?
McCain campaign ads have been full of lies, and it serves them right to be parodied.
See Krugman, “Blizzard of Lies.”

Edward: No doubt it’s good to be in America where we can make fun of each other. SNL is just having fun. We can agree on that.
This race is getting nasty though. On your “Blizzar of Lies” comment all I can say is “it depends on what your definition of is is.” I hope you remember who said that, speaking of blizzards of lies. Krugman saying that McCains ads have been “lies” is total crap. They are opinions and persepectives. Just like when Obama says “McCain is more of the same,” or “he is the same as Bush.” I believe that those are false statements and most of us would agree. But in reality, it’s an opinion that can’t justly be called a lie. That’s why I’m not writing an imature piece called “Obama is a Liar.” Such childishness. Please, don’t be a hypocrite.

I’m for McCain.
I thought the skit was funny.
I thought the Tina Fey/Palin and Amy Pohler/Hillary skit was funny too.
I don’t think it serves any of us to assume that the left is out to attack at every corner. On the other hand, it’d be really nice to have a website to shoot down such stupidity as “Palin’s a book burner” and “Troopergate.”
Just the facts <- what a nice concept.

This just wasn’t funny. It’s true that SNL has a liberal bent, but I don’t mind if it’s funny and smartly done.
Fey as Palin was funny, and a good parody.
As for lies, come on. It’s a two-way blizzard. Are you really so naive as to think Obama isn’t engaging in dirty politics?
