Keith Olbermann has been removed from the MSNBC anchor’s chair on all election coverage for the rest of the campaign due to on-air bias. He will still keep his popular Countdown program and continue to provide color commentary to the news desk. Chris Matthews was demoted as well.
Olbermann has been pulled from the upcoming debates and election night coverage after a controversial convention which oozed of liberal bias and reportedly embarrassed the network. He was part of an experiment with Matthews which put analysts in the role of anchors for election news coverage.
David Gregory will take over as anchor for MSNBC’s election coverage.
According to sources, the brass up at NBC News were displeased with the openly liberal direction that Olbermann and Matthews were taking the cable channel’s election coverage. The experiment had succeeded in generated ratings for MSNBC, but the parent company apparently believed they were damaging the franchise with overt bias.
Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams have reportedly grown tired of defending the antics of Olbermann and Matthews.
One of the final nails in Olbermann’s coffin occurred at the RNC convention. When Sarah Palin uttered her now-famous line about the liberal media, the crowd began to audibly chant “NBC! NBC! NBC!” You could almost hear the NBC staff and reputable news people groaning about their child network at MSNBC.
But the last straw was apparently Olbermann editorializing on air about a 911 tribute shown at the RNC. He took the mic back from Tom Brokaw and began to eviscerate the Republican Party for showing the video, going so far as to apologize to the viewers for the network covering this part of the convention. You can see the video below, an event which reportedly was subsequently much discussed internally at the network.
Ever before that moment there were signs that Keith Olbermann had fallen in disfavor. He was mysteriously missing from the opening night of the GOP convention. It was explained that Olbermann was in New York covering a hurricane, something that raised some eyebrows among the media.
He returned to air the next two nights but never returned physically to the convention. Meanwhile the format was changing. Dan Abrams who Olbermann has reportedly targeted at MSNBC was back, and David Gregory was already assuming a larger role along with the incomparable Brokaw.
While conservatives might take glee in Olbermann’s downfall, he still has his acidic show. And David Gregory has never been known as a middle-of-road guy either. He brings his own liberal bias, but at least he has the gravitas that Olbermann always craved but never achieved in the public arena.
Update: MSNBC president Phil Griffin has stated that the characterization of this move as a “demotion” for Olbermann and Matthews is incorrect. He also says the change has nothing to do with Republican pressure, but that the change is designed to free the MSNBC stars to state their opinions on air more freely. They will still be associated with political coverage, but in the traditional role of opinionated analysts rather than anchors.

If NBC management is claiming it didn’t know about obermann and matthews bias this election they are being disingenuous, its just that the people’s visceral reaction to the bias finally proved too dangerous a continuing business decision. This is the power of Palin at work just like I said. The media doesn’t know what to do with her except retreat currently till it counterattacts. Even obermann, during an interview, two years ago, admistted of course anchors were following one bias or another. They are just employees of the moment of the network edictors and management. The fact that NBC management thought it could just get away with such blatantly biased reporting shows their contempt for the American Public.

Good! The liberal media needs to a good housecleaning of all the liberal commies that are pumping out there propaganda. Maybe if McCain gets elected he can do something to get rid of those people and get some objective reporting insted of a bunch of lieberals telling lies.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Hmmm…it seems like Olbermann got called out, but really…how many of today’s modern media ‘reporters’ aren’t ‘reporting’ with some bias, either one way or the other?
September 8th, 2008 at 12:26 am
Nah, Don. I don’t much want the government messing with the press. I find Olbermann and his ilk disgusting, but I’m reminded of the saying: “I like to hear all the complaining about our government, it reminds me we have freedom. Try that in other places in the world”.
“I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”
America - what a country.

Even as someone who enjoys Olbermann and Matthews, I have found their over-the-top bias of late nauseating. Flipping between them and “Faux News” is like riding a roller coaster on a full stomach: you’re liable to get sick. A counterbalance is needed, but two wrongs don’t make a right. The antidote to a poison is, in sufficient quantity, itself a poison.

I’m sorry to see Keith go. There’s nothing on any main stream press anymore but opining. I rarely see a real well researched in depth story. As far as opinions go, I agreed with Keith. I think the exploitation of 9-11 is outrageous.
I also believe reporting should be biased in favor of democratic and scientific ideals.
Most of all, I think journalists should be rigorous pursuers of the truth — and they should be ultra hard on every single politician regardless of party. In search of truth and democracy there should be no middle ground.

Liberal media?
It’s a tough pill to swallow, the notion that the media in America are “liberal.” They gave Bush a pass on the buildup to the Iraq war, they look the other way as habeas corpus is unravelling, they buy the “national security” line when citizens’ phones are being tapped, and so on. And they still talk about national health insurance, not national health care.
Their positions are far further to the right than most western industrialized democracies’ conservatives. Liberal press?

Olbermann is worthless all-round. What he knows about Sports, most knowing people have forgotten. This guy must have dirty pictures of his bosses to be able to keep his job.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Shocked! I’m shocked I tells ya!
I’m telling you, CSPAN is the only way to go. No commentary = more enjoyment.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Olbermann is not only biased, but mean and a liar in his so called reporting. He is probably the most biased reoorter in the media. Chris Matthews follows closely
September 8th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Has anyone seen V for Vendetta? I’m starting to feel like that is where this country is headed.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:40 am
The most amusing thing about this is(pay attention those who say the mediia is not liberal bias)
Keith and Chris will be replaced with David Gregory ?
Has anyone seen Gregory and his leftist agenda get smacked down at white house press conferences before ?
The other Brian.
Your examples are small compared to the obvious.
Shall we start with the overwhelming coverage of Obama, which is a statistical fact ?

For those of you in doubt of the liberal media (I miss the blog hole reader sometimes), may I suggest two books, one called Arrogance the other called Bias. Both are written by the same person who worked for Dan Rather and CBS news for years and years. He is not a right wing ideolog, but someone who is exposing what should be perfectly obvious.
Also, if you really doubt the liberal media, just look at the newspaper endorsements for Kerry v. those for Bush, its almost 3 to 1 in favor of Kerry (yes, Bush did get the Murfreesboro Standard Examiner endorsement, but amazing almost no top city endorsement).
I suppose if you want to compare the American bias to other Western democratic bias, it is “to the right” but by the same token the Democrat party would be considered to the far right in many of these same countries.
Eh, I’ll never convince a liberal of media bias, but thought I’d give it a shot.

Success finally of destroying msNBC News just like we did to CBS minimizing ABC,CNN and All LeftWing hack Media. Give credit to BILL O’REILLY & FOX NEWS #1 for 90 months
September 8th, 2008 at 11:04 am
I am a FOX fan to a certain extent, but I wouldnt give too much credit to Bill and FOX.
I think people are just smart enough to know when they’re getting hosed.
It was pretty hard not to notice the banner MSNBC placed under Palin the day of the anouncement asking how many more houses Palin would add to the McCain ticket.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Ah,yes. Yet another example of the Foxnews “is the boogyman” mentality. Some folks sure hate Fox, O’Reilly, etc. Oops, sorry, gotta go, time to watch the O’Rally faktor to get my goosestepping orders… Ya know, I’m probably at risk of damaging an optic nerve rollin’ my eyes like that.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Has the deranged Andrew Sullivan also been given the boot by The Atlantic?
He has posted nothing but a photograph since last night. It is now past 4:00 p.m. in the East on a weekday, and he has been silent all day.
This is very unusual for him.

The differance between nbc and fox, is that nbc takes action when it sees bias on their network.
Fox has done nothing to try and stop obvious right wing bias reporting that has been happening for what?, 8 years!.
You don’t see democrats blameing Fox for bias coverage.
It amazes me how a group can use the media to help there campaign, by blameing them for trying to hurt there campaign, and people actually believe it.
Theres so much crap out there people can’t tell the differance between news and propaganda. The bad side of the digital age of information
September 8th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
IM1
I hope I didnt confuse you. Or maybe its me that is confused and thinks your recent post was directed at me.
Lets make no mistake about it. I have been an avid fan of Bill OReilly long before he moved to FOX.
I am just saying that I think the majority of the credit should go to the viewers.
It may very well be that FOX has contributed to a want and need for a more balanced presentation.
But I think the people finally got tired of their crap.
Like I said, I think that banner was the last straw. With no doubt that Bill was the first one to air it as dispicable.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I just cant get over the David Gregory replacement.
I mean, thats like replacing a red hot poker with a cattle prod.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
“The differance between nbc and fox, is that nbc takes action when it sees bias on their network.
Fox has done nothing to try and stop obvious right wing bias reporting that has been happening for what?, 8 years!.”
Well, first it has to be there in order to do something about it.
Second, if you are a far left loon then anything fair will appear to the right.
Its a fact by voter registration records that 73% of media personnel are registered democrats.
Take it from there.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
That’s why Capitalism works. The market drives the business. People didn’t like their ‘coverage’ and now they are replaced.
Couldn’t happen to nicer guys! lol
Hopefully, this will give Matthews a chance to get that tingle in his leg looked at.

Greetings, BryanMacAfee
The problem, as I see it, is we have created a designation of “liberal” within narrow parameters. In other words, we look at “liberal” within the context only of recent American political experience. As we move toward a more information-rich and globally interdependent environment we need to re-evaluate our definitions.
Quite frankly, and I’d guess this makes me a “radical” be American definitions, I think the Left in America is a weak puppy moving toward the centre of the pack because the alpha pit bull is on the right.
And just because the leader of the pack is more powerful, at least at some political level, that doesn’t mean that the hungry young dog won’t find some hunting grounds and a mate.
Hope I haven’t pushed this metaphor too far.
And by the way, I got up at 4:00am here in Maine, and I heard the coyotes howling, celebrating some kill or another. Remember, as we “liberals” do, that the ultimate responsibility of leadership is the health of the pack. And it’not about who gets the biggest piece of meat; it’s about making sure all of the pack get enough to eat.

By the way, there are two Brians. I’ve changes usernames so there is no confusion. If a post appears attributed to this new username thats not mine, I’ll respectfully withdraw from this forum. Ignatius, you’ll know me if you see me if I do.

Americans have forgotten 9/11. And they were just reminded.
Obermann forgot he’s just a tv personality. And he was just reminded.
