Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is threatening Israel again. He’s also starting work on a second nuclear plant and solidifying ties with Russia.

Iran’s Ahmadinejad is once again announcing that Israel will soon be wiped from the face of the earth. This is a threat he has repeated as fact frequently throughout his presidency since his election in 2005. He claims that the world’s turmoil comes out of Israel and from Zionists. He has said that Zionism has lost its philosophy of existence.

About the same time Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praised Ahmadinejad and told him to expect to have a second four year term as President. The Ayatollah has the final say about anything that goes on in the politics in Iran. He has never expressed that kind of support for another Iranian politician. He praised Ahmadinejad for standing up to the West, blocking Western influences and returning the country to a strict theocracy.

Ahmadinejad had run for office on the promise of improving the economy. However, since he has been in office the economy of Iran has plummeted and inflation is out of control. The people of Iran are suffering and he has been protested and criticized for his policies that have led to an economic crisis within the country.

He has defied the West by building nuclear capabilities. He claims his nuclear arsenal is only for power and not for weapons. No one believes that and he openly defied anyone to do anything about it. He has repeated threatened to destroy Israel (the Little Satan) and the United States (the Big Satan). He made these claims when he spoke at the United Nations in New York. In his U.N. speech he talked about his belief in the coming of the 12th Iman. We’ll get to that a little later.

He’s highly critical of Britain for forcing the Jews on the Middle East (his words) and making Germany feel guilty for the Holocaust that he claims never happened. He has written letters to German Chancellor Angela Merkel to that effect. Despite his repeated threats, no on seems to be listening or taking him seriously.

Iran’s vice president in charge of tourism, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, stated last week that the Iranian people could be friends with Israel. He was quickly reminded that Israel is the source of all world suffering, removed from office and chided by the Ayatollah for making those remarks.

Iran has completed work on the controversial nuclear plant they claim they aren’t building and have begun work on a second. They have also built a satellite that has been successfully tested. The U.N., European Union and the United States have condemned Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Iranian newspapers are reporting that the West is just trying to keep Iran from progress.

In light of the recent actions of Russia, its also notable that Iran’s President has been building closer ties with Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, and the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin. Its not secret that Russia has shared nuclear technology with Iran. The only thing standing between Iran and Russia is, coincidentally, Georgia.

Iran has been fighting the U.S. for years in Iraq and on whatever battlefield they can. Iranian weapons, money and forces have flowed across the border to fight American and Iraqi Soldiers throughout the battles there.

President Ahmadinejad has made these threats before and made them frequently. Few people actually listen to him or take him seriously. I believe not hearing what he is telling us is at our own peril. Especially in light of Ahmadinejad’s apocalypitic vision.
