Meet Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX) who is rumored to be the latest on the ever growing short list for Barack Obama’s Veep. Read his biography, see photos and a video of him below.

With the start of the Democratic Convention just hours away, a tizzy of speculation on Democrat Barack Obama’s vice presidential choice is now centering on U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards of Waco, considered a low-key moderate and dark horse ticket prospect.

Edwards, first elected to Congress in 1990, campaigned with Obama in Texas earlier this year. Supposedly, it is their chemistry and the experience Edwards might bring to the ticket that is fueling speculation at this time about a possible vice presidential nomination.

Of course, still mentioned are better known national brands like Gov. Kathleen Sebelious of Kansas, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware and Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia.

I am waiting for my text message. Are you?

Chet Edwards Biography

Thomas Chester “Chet” Edwards was born November 24, 1951 in Corpus Christi, Texas so his age is 57. He graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University in 1974 earning a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Edwards was elected to the Texas Senate in 1983, and served until 1990. In the Texas Senate, Edwards was a member of the Senate Education Committee, and helped reduce class sizes in public schools. He was named by Texas Monthly as one of the “Ten Outstanding Legislators” during his tenure.

Edwards was elected to the U.S. House in 1990. Interestingly, his District – the area surrounding Waco – has been trending more and more Republican but Edwards has been able to hold onto his seat, though with increasingly narrow margins. His district includes the town of Crawford, the home of President George W. Bush’s Prairie Chapel Ranch.

He serves as a senior member on both the House Budget and the Appropriations Committees. He also serves on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, co-chair of the House Army Caucus, and the USO Congressional Caucus.

Chet Edwards is a lifelong Methodist. He and his wife, Lea Ann, along with their sons, J.T. age 12 and Garrison age 11 attend the Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, and the McLean Baptist Church in McLean, Virginia.
