Barbara Flavin was born on March 25, 1949 in Gardner, Massachusetts. Barbara was raised in Concord, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of John Francis and Evelyn Mary Flavin. She went to Wheaton College in Norton Massachusetts. She graduated magna cum laude in 1971 with a degree in psychology.

Bill and Barbara Richardson were high school sweethearts in Massachusetts. They dated for seven years and married on August 5, 1972 in the Goddard Chapel at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. They have no children and live in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Barbara owns an antique accessories and antique restoration business. She is an advocate for literacy, childhood immunizations and issues related to domestic violence.
