Russia has been exercising its might over Georgia for the past week. The Americans have assisted the Georgian military’s return from fighting in Iraq, so they can defend themselves at home. It’s easy for us to look at Russia as the bad guys, because as Americans, we’re used to it. But in this conflict, no one is innocent.
When the battle includes ethnic cleansing, there is usually one only one party doing the cleansing. In this case, Russia is accusing Georgia of it, Georgia is accusing Russia of it, and people are dying en masse.
Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s ambassador to NATO, said the Georgian forces committed genocide and ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia.
Georgia’s National Security Council accused Russian troops on Saturday of conducting “ethnic cleansing” in South Ossetia.
So who’s dying? Who are these South Ossetians? They are a mix of Ossetians and Georgians. Which means mostly Christian, with some Islamic influence. According to Wikipedia:
The Ossetians are an Iranic ethnic group indigenous to Ossetia, a region that spans the Caucasus Mountains. They are of the Causasian race. The Ossetians mostly populate North Ossetia-Alania in Russia, and South Ossetia a large part of which is now de facto independent but internationally recognised as part of Georgia. They speak Ossetic, an Indo-European language of the Iranian branch. The Ossetians are mostly Christian with large Muslim minority.
Georgia is a breakaway former part of Russia. South Ossetia is an independent part of Georgia. Georgia wishes to be part of NATO, and is backed by the USA on its bid. Russia is trying to block the bid and flex its muscle on the global stage. And all of them – with the exception of the Americans – are slaughtering these South Ossetians in the process.

This war is a case of two crackpots calling the kettle black.
Bush: Russian response to Georgia ‘disproportionate’
Cheney: Russian action ‘must not go unanswered’
RUSSIA – rUSsiA – .US..A – USA
GEORGIA – geoRGIA – …RGIA – IRAG

I find the response of the Russian UN Ambassador interesting and on the mark when the US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad implied Russia is conducting a “campaign of terror” in Georgia and killing innocent civilians.
Vitaly Churkin responded – “This is completely unacceptable, especially from the lips of a representative of a country whose actions we are aware of in Iraq, Afghanistan and Serbia”
And indeed the representative of a state that invaded Iraq without provocation with countless thousands dead should find it difficult to level accusations under almost identical circumstances.
And when you talk of over reaction I remember very well what the Israeli reaction to the abduction of a couple of soldiers in Lebanon was. America worked actively at the UN to prevent a cease fire resolution, giving the Israelis time to teach hezbolah a lesson and weaken their appeal within the populace of Southen Lebanon.
Russia watched all that happen without consequencies for the aggressors and the heavy handed armies. Now you ask it to mind the way it responds to violent provocation – what sort of double dealing is that?!
Does America Britain and France think the world is blind, deaf and dumb and we don’t know you are all birds of the same feather roosting on the same cloths line with Russia?
August 11th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Russia needs to stop or the US will issue even stronger statements! Heck, Rice said she made 90 phone calls today. Maybe she’ll hit 100 tomorrow.
Look, the reality is that we’re not going to go to war with Russia over Georgia, and the world needs Russia’s energy resources, so we aren’t going to impose sanctions. That sucks for the Georgians, but that’s the way the world works.

The first casualty of war is the truth. The first 3 comments to this article are evidence of that.
Russia is cleansing Georgia of Georgians at the moment and these commenters are blaming America. What cowards to blame a benign power. They know Russia will not be so benign and will not overlook their criticism.

Russia isn’t after Georgia, he’s after Europe. The question is whether or not NATO can actually muster up its courage and do what it was formed to do – protect Europe.
They have a little window of opportunity here to stop Russia. I’m afraid they’ll let that opportunity go by while they wring their hands. Then it’ll be a long night for Western Europe while Europe holds all the oil/gas hostage.

Gee Larry – did you learn how to do that fancy typing in … what … the third grade??
August 11th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
It really is hilarious how out of control BDS is. Libs blaming Bush and the USA for Russia invading Georgia. I think Bob is ultimately right though, we’ll probably let them push Georgia around, but most of the other Warsaw countries are NATO Members now (man, never thought I’d write that in a sentence). If Russia attacked any of them, we are obligated by treaty to respond. The timing of this attack is no coincidence. Georgia probably is admitted to NATO in December and then Russia could do nothing.
At least the Ukraine has some nads and is threatening action against the Russian bear, too bad the rest of the world has none.

You know, in a strange sort of way, this is just the world rightening itself. I grew up practicing duck and cover for nuclear attacks (what were those school desks going to do against a nuclear attack any way). Russia was always the bad guys. It only seems right that they are some how back in that role. This is the world I know. All this pretending that Russia was adopting democracy was bull crap all along.
“United forever in friendship and labor,
Our mighty republics will ever endure.
The Great Soviet Union will live through the ages.
The dream of a people their fortress secure. ”
Ahh, that tune brings back memories.
August 11th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Bryan – I agree – except the NATO nations are looking at their future if they don’t get the nads to do something right now. The longer they do nothing but provide ‘moral support’ the more emboldened Putin becomes.
Then again – maybe Russia is going to just wipe Georgia off the map, blame the US and then go back to drinking vodka.
Then there will be peace in our time.
We can always hope their good intentions will prevail.
August 11th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Hah.
I grew up in Florida during the 60s and did that “hide under your desk ” crap.
But like I said on the other thread.
Georgias neighbors should be very afraid.
Just connect the dots and the direction Putin is heade in is plain to see.
Whats even more ironic is that Bush was sitting about 10 feet from him at the Olympic opening ceremonies when all this started
August 11th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Remember Micky, Bush looked into his soul, so we’re all good.
August 11th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
What soul ?
August 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
McCain said he sees the letters “KGB” in Putins eyes.
You can read a lot into that statement
August 11th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
He sure did micky. I think McCain got it right!
I remember the duck and cover drills too – only I was very VERY young (
). I think it was just supposed to make us feel like we were doing something until we were vaporized. LOL
August 11th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
I grew up with the duck and cover routine ingrained in my soul, and yes Bryan, the world has righted itself and it’s back to normal…the Russians *were* and still are, the bad guys.Somehow, life feels normal again in JoAnne world.
August 11th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
hey ! I just moved to America from Denmark and here I am being taught to take cover after being here a week.
I had a Cuban babysitter who just got outta there ( she let me feel her boobs) and I was all to hip to them ruskie bastards at 6 years old.

August 11th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Well gosh golly.
All I said was “boobs”.
And she was way cuter than Dashiell Torralba .

Russia isn’t after Georgia, he’s after Europe. The question is whether or not NATO can actually muster up its courage and do what it was formed to do – protect Europe.
So what happens when Russia turns off the oil & natural gas spigot to Europe?
You seem to be completely detached from reality Beth.
August 11th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
All this pretending that Russia was adopting democracy was bull crap all along.
Amazing isn’t it Bryan? Do you remember in 2001 when President Bush said he could see into Putin’s soul?
Think about the next time you folks accuse Obama of lacking in judgment and experience.
August 11th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
BTW, did anyone catch NASA’s announcement today that they are delaying the Orion space shuttle replacement until 2014, and that NASA intends to rely on Russia from 2010 to 2014 to support ISS missions?
Add destruction of the US manned space program to the long list of Bush’s accomplishments.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
“Think about the next time you folks accuse Obama of lacking in judgment and experience.”
I think about it every day Bob.
When did Obama ever say that we had to worry about the Soviets ?
Besides that, stop living in the past.
Concentrate on the message Bush and Cheny are sending now.
Oh, and if you want a good laugh, make sure you notice that Obama is trying his best to sound presidential about all this.
Only after he heard what Mcain, Bush and Cheny had to say
August 11th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
The truth of the matter is that no one is sure what is going on there in terms of the number of casualties. Here is the latest I was able to find (from Daily Mail, UK source) – does anyone have any more accurate and veritable information?
