Meet Dr. James Dobson. He is the founder and chairman of Focus on the Family and is criticising Barack Obama. Read his biography and see photos and a video of him below.

As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement’s biggest names, Dr. James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution.

This criticism is specificallly related to a June 2006 speech given by Obama to the liberal Christian group “Call to Renewal” and his argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion’s terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

Dobson said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the “lowest common denominator of morality.”

“I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said.

Dobson’s remarks were aired today on his Focus on the Family radio program. Interestingly, this criticism comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Colorado Springs. A spokesperson for Focus on the Family said they would welcome a visit from Team Obama.

James Dobson Biography

James Dobson, Ph.D., was born on April 21, 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana so his age is 72. He is an evangelical Christian and chairman of the board of Focus on the Family, a nonprofit organization he founded in 1977. He has never drawn a salary, but which has promoted his related books and publications, yielding him substantial royalties.

His organization produces internationally syndicated radio programs, heard on over 3,000 radio stations, and in twenty seven languages in approximately 4,130 additional facilities in over 160 other countries!

His commentaries are heard by more than 220 million people by way of radio every day, including a translation of a program carried on state-owned radio stations in the Republic of China. He is seen on approximately 60 television stations daily in the U.S. The ministry receives so much mail it has its own ZIP code!

Dobson was for 14 years an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and served for 17 years on the Attending Staff of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in the Division of Child Development and Medical Genetics. He has an earned Ph.D. from the University of Southern California (1967) in the field of child development. He is a licensed psychologist in the state of California and a licensed marriage, family and child counselor in both California and Colorado.

Dr. Dobson is well known for his conservative views on theology and politics. He was recently named “The Most Influential Evangelical Leader in America” by Christianity Today magazine. And contrary to what many assume, James Dobson is not a minister or religiously ordained in any way.

An absolutist disgusted by the compromises of politics, he sneers at those who place “self-preservation and power ahead of moral principle.” From gay marriage to partial birth abortion, he is not afraid to let his displeasure be known throughout his listening audience, encouraging them to let congress hear their voices as well. This has resulted in numerous occasions when the Capital Hill switchboard has experienced a shut down — or should that be a “melt down?”

At times it’s hard to tell what James Dobson hates more: Washington Politics and those who rise to be Messiah President or the looming Cultural and Moral Apocalypse!
