Meet Sheila Dixon. On January 17, 2007, she became the first woman to serve as Baltimore’s Mayor and is currently in her first term. Read her biography and see photos and a video of her below.

Today, Maryland state prosecutors searched her home, spending more than seven hours inside and emerged carrying boxes, folders and a blue cooler they had brought in with them. The raid is reportedly linked to a widening investigation into City Hall spending. Sterling Clifford, the mayor’s chief spokesman, has said he didn’t know why the prosecutors were interested in the contents of Dixon’s home.

Dixon has attracted quite a bit of attention from prosecutors during the past two years. The mayor has been dogged for approving a deal that provided financial compensation to a company that employed her sister, Janice Dixon.

The Shoe Incident

In 1991 during a heated debate, then Councilwoman Dixon waved her shoe at white colleagues on the Baltimore City Council and yelled out:

“You’ve been running things for the last 20 years. Now the shoe is on the other foot!”

This little drama has led many people – from friend to foe – to view her as a very divisive person. During her run for Mayor, Dixon explained her earlier inappropriate comment by stating that she has “matured” since making the shoe comment and that she now attempts “to communicate better with individuals.”

Twice divorced, Sheila Dixon is a single mom raising two teenagers. More photos and a video from her own website are below.
